Eurka Yebego Adragot Dirigit (in short: ‘Eur¡ka’) is a local NGO registered in accordance with Ethiopia's CSO Proclamation No. 1113/2019. We pursue any sustainable action aiming at a visible progress of children’s rights and well-being through projects seeking particularly to: prevent or alleviate poverty; increase households’ food security; enhance health and nutrition statuses; protect or support persons at risk; empower mothers and caretakers; improve access to quality education; expand family planning practices; provide decent shelter and clothing; offer legal assistance and psychosocial counselling, etc.

Our new intervention, entitled ‘ResPreP’ (for ‘Comprehensive SGBV Response, Prevention and Preparedness Action in Conflict-Affected Areas of the North Shewa Zone, Amhara Region, Ethiopia’), is funded by UN Women as a coordinator of the Women’s Peace & Humanitarian Fund (WPHF) and is to be implemented throughout the year 2023. The project’s overall objectives are: 1/ to provide life-saving assistance, healing and recovery services to SGBV (Sexual and Gender-Based Violence) survivors among IDP populations (Internally Displaced Persons) and host communities scattered in the zone; 2/ to prevent further SGBV cases and foster safety, resilience and conflict readiness through awareness-raising and capacity building of women’s associations in chronically affected areas.

JOB PROFILE

3 female candidates will be recruited as GBV Officer / Safe House Supervisor and key staff members to manage ResPreP’s SGBV response and preventive activities in Debre Berhan, Shewa Robit, Ataye & surrounding areas. They will report to our Gender Project Manager and Head of Programmes and will be supported by a team of Nurses / Nutritionists and Psychologists / Psycho-Social Workers (among other). Her key responsibilities will include:

  • Patient assessment, case management & follow-up: distribution of dignity kit items upon admission and discharge; participation in daily empowerment activities with residents and weekly case review committee meetings with caseworkers; delivery of age-appropriate training and awareness-raising; assessment and material support of economic victims; liaising with the Gender Project Manager or Head of Programmes if transport is required by patients for referral; training other staff on their fields of expertise (health or social issues);

  • Planning and implementing all prevention activities: sensitizing school clubs in urban areas on gender equality, harmful norms and other GBV-related issues; supporting at-risk girls, including through educational kits; organizing public meetings in rural areas to mobilize community members; promoting GBV hotlines for survivors, victims or witnesses of violence, including rape, sexual abuse and assault; coordinating mass awareness raising events such as radio shows on Harmful Traditional Practices (HTP), such child early / forced marriage (CEFM), ensuring a wide coverage and dissemination in the targeted areas.

  •  Capacity building and miscellaneous tasks: continuous coaching of partner women’s groups and associations; conducting activities at their side in the field, both for prevention / GBV awareness and outreach of victims or survivors among IDP populations and host communities; taking part in the organisation of workshops for GBV responders, women’s groups and associations; occasionally substituting the Gender Project Manager / other colleagues, e.g. managing incoming calls / referrals; drafting / translating / reviewing IEC materials, ensuring key messages are appropriate for the community and conducting pre-testing before dissemination; performing other tasks, as assigned by management.

Number of positions: 3 (three)

Location: Debre Berhan, North Shewa zone, Amhara region

Career Level: Junior Level (1+ - 2 years experience) / Mid Level (2+ - 5 years experience)

Duration: 10 months (with a probability of contract extension)

Job Requirements

Education level:

  • Required: Degree in public health, nursing, midwifery, social work, mental health, etc.

Professional experience:

  • Preferred: Similar position (GBV or child protection), NGO / social work, psychology or experience caring for female patients, preferably SGBV victims / survivors.

Other expectations:

  • Required: Written and spoken proficiency in Amharic; team player; high stress tolerance; flexibility / adaptation capacity; willingness to work in shifts (including at night, during weekends and holidays) when needed or to substitute colleagues in case of emergency, so as to ensure 24-hour care of GBV survivors in all circumstances; capacity to receive and restrain the expression of strong emotions, as well as to observe, evaluate and analyse the content of a counselling group therapy session with structured tools; ability to build positive relationships through acceptance, cooperation and mutual respect; capacity to maintain clear personal and professional boundaries; rigorous in recording and reporting accurate patient data on a timely basis, according to professional norms; hard-working and a self-motivated person; never convicted and free from substance abuse addiction.

  • Preferred: Written and spoken proficiency in English; solid understanding of the dynamics of domestic and sexual violence; good knowledge of the MHPSS guidelines and of key messaging to vulnerable caregivers, as well as other issues (e.g. TBRI, GBV programming, child development, IYCF, HTPs, CEFM, PSEA, etc.); computer proficiency (mostly MS Word); CPR / first aid certified or willingness to secure the training after recruitment.
