Job Description

The Research Officer (RO) is tasked the coordination and day to day management of the an IDRC-funded project that is heavily research-oriented and focuses on Unpaid Care and Domestic Work. The RO plays a crucial role in defining research objectives, requirements, and developing various Terms of Reference (TORs). Working within a team, the RO meticulously reviews, analyzes, and ensures that appropriate methods and methodologies are utilized, and that interpretations adhere to established standards throughout the research process. This is done to guarantee effectiveness and efficiency. Additionally, the RO is accountable for coordinating, creating, and executing surveys, research, and baseline studies across various projects to align with the mission and goals of NEWA as a national agency for Gender Equality, Women Empowerment, and the fight against GBV/VAWG. Furthermore, the RO diligently identifies and documents structural obstacles, gaps in the implementation of national policies, laws, and plans, as well as the authentic involvement of women, young women, and girls in their respective areas of interest, demands and necessities. This includes their participation in leadership, decision-making processes, conflict prevention, peacebuilding, and humanitarian responses for both immediate and future actions based on the strategic objectives outlined in the FYSP.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve as technical research focal person for the Unpaid Care and Domestic Work (UCDW) and related existing policies focused research project supported by the IDRC and implemented by NEWA  

  • Engage in identifying and follow up the researches outsourced to consulates, provide information and facilitate the research, survey and studies, 

  • Review research guidelines, tools and  technical proposals and inception and final reports of outsourced researches 

  • Identify research needs and gaps that help to initiate advocacy, policy review or/ and formulations to fulfil the mission and objectives of NEWA, 

  • Communicate with stakeholders, engaged in the researches 

  • Develop, coordinate, conduct, and implement surveys, research, and baseline studies under different projects to meet the mission and objectives of NEWA. This work includes: 

  • Develop research protocols, plans, need-based research proposals and submit them to donors for funding,  and ensure the implementation of the research protocol, 

  • Review and comment on research initiatives and designs of the program department,

  • Make sure the research protocol guides the research actions and employs appropriate methodology and methods for each research carried out by NEWA,

  • Identify updated research software and ensure making use of them, 

  • Engage with the procurement committee in the selection of research services as appropriate, 

  • Disseminate the research and survey reports to stakeholders and partners in timely manner,  

  • Establish/ strengthen relationships with research institutions, academia at national and international levels

  • Provide technical support in incorporating input and comments of stakeholders into research reports as appropriate,  

  • Recommend policy and advocacy actions based on research findings and validation workshops,

  • Create systems to track research progress, organize information, and archive present work:o

    • Document and record all research and studies for future reference of NEWA and partners in hard and soft/electronic copies,

    • Document relevant and recent research and surveys conducted by other institutions for NEWA use (CSA, DHS, others).

    • Develop a database management system at NEWA level along with the communication section (IT),

    • Organize NEWA’s information Centre for easy and friendly use of staff and other beneficiaries, 

    • Develop a computerized system to track research/ study subjects, monitor data quality control to ensure adherence to the research protocol,

  • Communicate and keep the Program Manager abreast on research/survey/baseline status

  • Build the research capacity of NEWA staff and member associations/ organizations,

  • Perform related duties as required by the PM ,

Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications & Skills 

  • Strong research skills with a background Gender Equality, policy/ advocacy,

  • Familiarity with unpaid care and domestic work or care economy concepts, and relevant policies,  programs and plans 

  • Fluent in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and the Google Workspace

  • Having experience with either Adobe or Canva

  • Strong communication  and analytical skills

  • Should have the ability to write well sounded reports

  • Reliable and able to work independently under low supervision and in a team

  • With intercultural skills and values 

  • Fluency in English, Amharic and other local languages are an asset) 

  • Able to meet deadlines for deliverables

Professional/qualifications: 

BA degree in social science and related fields ,Master’s degree in the field of social science (gender studies), statistics, management or related fields subjected with research experience

Relevant Experience:  

Managing research focused projects/ programs and designing research Proposal Previous experience on unpaid care and domestic Work or Care Economy

Length of Experience: 

Minimum work experience of 4 years in research, gender and monitoring and evaluation At Least 2 Year

Key skills:

  • Skills in qualitative and quantitative data analysis and management

  • Skills in using data analysis and management packages Good interpersonal and communication skills, Writing, critical thinking skills.
