Job Description
1. Background
The Ethiopian Public Health Institute receives financial support from CDC Ethiopia to strengthen the national health laboratory system for increased accessibility and improved quality of HIV and TB core diagnostic and monitoring tests. To achieve this goal, the institute is planning to hire competent EQA laboratory assistance with best qualification and experience to plays a crucial role in ensuring the reliability and accuracy of laboratory results. The EQA laboratory assistant will assist the preparation, coordination, and distribution of external quality assessment tools and materials, ensuring compliance with national and international standards.
2. Objectives
Support proficiency testing by assisting with the production, packaging, and distribution of materials for EQA activities.
Manage data by collecting, documenting, and supporting the analysis of EQA results to ensure quality improvement.
Ensure compliance with ISO 15189 and ISO 17043 requirements in all EQA processes.
Facilitate logistics and communication between EQA centers, regional laboratories, and participating facilities.
3. Scope of Work
Assisting in the preparation of various EQA materials, including biological samples, chemical solutions, and other relevant materials.
Performing quality control checks on all prepared materials.
Assisting with equipment maintenance and calibration.
Maintaining accurate inventory records of all materials.
Adhering to all laboratory safety rules and regulations.
Assisting in the preparation of production records and reports.
Collaborating with other laboratory staff and the EQA division head.
Assist in the planning, preparation, and implementation of proficiency testing, onsite evaluation, rechecking/retesting (RBR) activities and other related activities;
Collect, organize, and analyze data from all EQA activities, including PT results, onsite evaluation reports, and RBR findings;
Ensure compliance with ISO 15189, ISO 17043, and other relevant standards across all EQA processes;
Coordinate logistics for the distribution of PT materials, collection of retesting samples, and arrangements for onsite evaluations;
Maintain accurate records and documentation for all components of the EQA program, ensuring traceability and accessibility;
Support the development and implementation of corrective actions and quality improvement measures based on EQA findings;
Facilitate communication and collaboration between EQA centers, regional laboratories, and participating facilities;
Participate in the organization and delivery of capacity-building activities, including training for laboratory staff and EQA focal persons;
Assist in the monitoring and evaluation of EQA program effectiveness and provide input for reporting and program improvement;
Prepare PT materials by weighing, measuring, dispensing, labeling, and ensuring proper storage and transportation according to established protocols;
Conduct quality checks to confirm the accuracy, stability, and homogeneity of prepared materials while documenting all observations;
Support the maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment to ensure proper functionality;
Maintain accurate inventory records, manage orders, and ensure proper storage and handling of materials and reagents;
Follow laboratory safety rules, use PPE, maintain cleanliness, and report hazards or incidents promptly;
Maintain detailed records of activities and assist in preparing production documents and EQA-related reports;
Collaborate with team members, communicate effectively, and participate in meetings and training sessions;
5. Key Qualifications and Experience
Education:
Bachelor's degree MSc in Medical Laboratory Science, Chemistry, or a related field.
Experience:
Master’s 8 years of experience in a laboratory setting, preferably in a clinical or research environment.
Bachelor's degree10 years of experience in a laboratory setting, preferably in a clinical or research environment.
Experience in handling biological materials and chemicals is preferred.
Skills:
Strong laboratory skills, including accurate weighing, measuring, and pipetting.
Attention to detail and accuracy.
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
Good record-keeping skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Proficiency in using laboratory equipment and software.
6. Reporting Structure
The EQA Laboratory Assistant will report directly to the EQA division head.
7. Performance Indicators
Accuracy and timeliness of EQA material preparation.
Adherence to laboratory safety protocols.
Quality of work and attention to detail.
Contribution to team goals and objectives.
Accuracy and completeness of documentation.
Proactive identification and resolution of issues.
Contract Duration and Remuneration
The contract will be for one year but extendable depending on satisfactory performance and the need of business continuity.
The Assistant will be based at the EPHI in Addis Ababa and will travel to regions when it is necessary.
Remuneration will be based on the MoF contract staff salary scale
