Job Description

Population Council Ethiopia is implementing a mixed-methods study to assess the feasibility, acceptability, safety, continuation, and user experience of the Hormonal IUD (HIUD) in public health facilities in Ethiopia. The study includes baseline enrollment interviews, follow-up interviews at 1, 6, and 12 months, qualitative interviews, and limited observational activities. To support this study, qualified Data Collectors will be recruited to conduct high-quality interviews with clients, providers, and key informants in selected health facilities across the targeted regions.

Reports to: Field Coordinator / Regional Supervisor
Project: Feasibility, Acceptability, Safety, and Continuation of Hormonal IUD (HIUD) in Public Health Facilities
Implementing Agencies: Population Council Ethiopia in partnership with the Ministry of Health & Engender Health. 

Salary: Competitive and Based on the Organization’s pay scale for temporary staff.

Duration of Assignment

  • The assignment period will be 12–14 months, aligned with:

    • Baseline enrollment

    • 1-month follow-up

    • 6-month follow-up

    • 12-month follow-up

  • Data collectors may be hired part-time or on a round-based consultancy agreement.

The Data Collector will be responsible for administering structured questionnaires, conducting follow-up interviews, ensuring ethical and high-quality data collection, maintaining confidentiality, and working closely with facility staff and supervisors. The role requires strong interpersonal skills, knowledge of ethical research, willingness to travel, and the ability to work independently.

Duties & Responsibilities:

A. Data Collection Tasks

  • Conduct baseline enrollment interviews with eligible HIUD users using tablets/phones (MQUAD).

  • Conduct 1-, 6-, and 12-month follow-up interviews (telephone or in-person), including:

    • Continuation status

    • Side effects and complications

    • Satisfaction and acceptability

    • Method switching

  • Administer provider and facility questionnaires where applicable.

  • Conduct in-depth interviews (IDIs) with selected participants (if assigned).

  • Accurately record responses in digital tools (MQUAD) and ensure completeness.

B. Participant Management & Recruitment

  • Verify eligibility criteria and confirm documented informed consent.

  • Maintain respectful, non-judgmental interactions with clients.

  • Ensure participants' privacy during interviews (home visits or facility-based).

  • Track appointments and follow-up timelines using study tracking sheets.

C. Ethical & Confidentiality Responsibilities

  • Protect participant confidentiality at all times.

  • Safely handle any documents or digital devices with identifiable data.

  • Immediately report any adverse events, distress cases, or disclosures.

  • Follow Do-No-Harm procedures when sensitive issues arise.

D. Coordination & Reporting

  • Maintain communication with facility providers and supervisors.

  • Submit daily completed forms and resolve data inconsistencies.

  • Participate in daily/weekly debriefings and refresher sessions.

  • Provide feedback on challenges with recruitment, consent, or data tool use.

Job Requirements

Education

Minimum Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in: Nursing, Midwifery, Public Health, Social Sciences

  • Health Extension background (Level IV+) may be considered with strong experience.

Experience

  • At least 1–2 years of experience in data collection for research, surveys, or evaluations.

  • Prior experience with sexual and reproductive health (SRH) or family planning studies is highly desirable.

  • Experience conducting phone-based data collection is preferred.

Skills and Competencies

  • Ability to communicate fluently in Amharic and local languages is an added advantage. Those working in Oromia region should demonstrate fluency in Afan Oromo.

  • Excellent interviewing skills — both structured and semi-structured.

  • Competence in using tablet-based data collection tools (MQUAD).

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and manage sensitive information.

  • Ability to travel frequently within assigned regions.

  • Female applicants are preferred.
