The Fred Hollows Foundation is one of Australia’s most respected and trusted international development organisations whose vision is to end avoidable blindness and ensure the work of Fred Hollows lives on.

 

Ethiopia is one of The Foundations largest funded programs, focused on the Elimination of Trachoma.  Up until now our program has focused on the complex and direct delivery of services to help those in need.  With strong foundations in place, we are now looking to enter into a new phase of our programming building on the work that we have already done.

 

In line with the priorities of the New Global Strategy, the next phase of our program will see us moving towards a system strengthening approach ensuring the work that we do, is sustainable and integrated within the local health systems.  Moving forward we will focus on the following key areas;

·         Support and Strengthen the health systems – integrating trachoma into broader eye health services

·         New Comprehensive Eye Care Programs (cataract, diabetic retinopathy, Uncorrected Refractive Error (URE) and trachoma)

·         Sustainability  - through increased investment and support we will work hand in hand with local governments

 

About the Position

Reporting to and working with Act to End NTDs | East program manager & Act to End NTDs | East program coordinators. S/he will be responsible for implementation of Trachoma Elimination related surveys to be conducted in Oromia region.  The Trachoma Elimination Program has a robust SAFE framework and this position will primarily responsible for impact evaluating the impacts the SAFE program intervention has brought in eliminating trachoma from the targeted districts of the region.

Detail description:

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

·         The Trachoma Survey officer will be responsible for planning survey, development of survey protocol based on Tropical Data guideline and methodology.

·         Coordinate training of survey team and ensure training efficiency and effectiveness.

·         Work closely with the Oromia Regional Health Bureau (ORHB), and targeted district health offices for smooth running of the impact and surveillance surveys.

·         Responsible for ensuring quality of survey data collection using smart phones, analysis and generating the survey result report for various audiences including the government, The Foundation, and donors.

·         Properly manage supply and logistics relevant to the survey including field survey coordination.

·         Coordinate field data collection managing multiple survey teams in targeted districts of the Oromia region.

·         Work closely with internal and external partners to ensure appropriate integration and smooth running of the survey activities as well as working as part of the broader FHF Ethiopia programs team to ensure the success of the overall program.

Job Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in impact surveys and research activities.
  • Experience in electronic data collection using smart phones.
  • Masters level in Public Health preferably MPH or MSc in epidemiology.
  • Excellent written and spoken comprehension of Afan English, Amharic, Oromo, and Languages  
  • Extensive experience working with international development organisation or community-based organizations, academic/research institutions.
  • Demonstrated experience in promoting ownership of research agenda and outcomes with government partners.
  • Participation in the Global Trachoma Mapping (GTM) project experience is a plus.
  • IT Proficiency in SPSS, Microsoft Office Excel, or other proprietary data management software.
  •  Excellent interpersonal skills.
