Background:

The Soufflet Group is a French family-owned business which is collecting and adding value to agricultural raw materials through industrial milling and malting among other activities. France’s top private cereal collector, the Group is also a major player in supplying inputs to farmers cultivating various field crops.

In malting, it is a front-rank world player on the malt market with 28 malt plants in Europe, Latin America, and Asia, located at the heart of the barley producing regions.

Varietal selection, seed multiplication, choosing the best quality barley for its malt plants and the precision of its manufacturing process all enable it to produce the finest malt for its brewer customers.

Soufflet has started its operation in Ethiopian in 2017 and is setting up a manufacturing unit and the associated value-chain, aiming to source locally 100% of its malting barley needs. To develop its procurement plan and build the value-chain, Soufflet is looking to hire a Malt Barley Procurement Manager.

Job Summary:

The malting barley procurement manager is in charge to establish an operational team (commercial and technical team, collection points, transportation to temporary storage and to the factory) for promoting the growth of malting barley. He participates to the development strategy in the Regions where the company projects to develop its procurement activities to supply its malting factory located in Addis Ababa. He is assuring the raw material sourcing activities from the out-growers program, primary cooperatives and unions and/or trader to supply the adequate quantities of quality malting barley to the malting factory. He participates in the definition of trade policies of the company for all agriculture related matters.

Key responsibilities:

  • Participate in the definition of trade policy of the company and propose to the General Manager the relevant strategy for each region (from sourcing channels, to inputs supply strategy, barley purchase and procurement planning, to communication with farmers, etc.)
  • Define the budget of the Regions in terms of volumes of collected barley, revenue, gross margin, expenses and results. Once approved, monitor their implementation to achieve the objectives.
  • Determine with Field Staff (commercial and technical) the Region's business objectives by sector and client, and prioritize actions to increase market share.
  • Lead the Field Staff in each Region and ensure compliance with the trade policies defined.
  • Supervise, coordinate and monitor the operations from delivery of inputs to malting barley procurement, storage and delivery to the factory. Strong execution skills.
  • Recruit, lead, motivate, and train the Field Staff
  • Implement, manage and report the weekly positions regarding purchases of barley, sales of seeds, sales of any inputs in terms of volume, value and margin.
  • Monitor and control the regional positions, and bring to Management any further information and feed-back to ensure a clear reporting of the activity.

Location:

  • Head Office located in Addis Ababa. Frequent travels in Regions (Oromia and Amhara).

Reports to: 

  • General Manager and work closely with the Agronomy Manager

 

Job Requirements

  • Master in Agriculture / Agronomy / Food science / Management / Marketing
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a supervisory position in a similar organization (related to the food industry and/or agriculture)
  • Experience in supply-chain management and contract farming
  • Strong knowledge of the cooperatives sector and agriculture related stakeholders (administration, input suppliers, aggregators and traders, micro-finance institutions, etc.)
  • Proven leadership, excellent communicant (from farmers to administrations) and available within the team
  • Knowledge of malt barley value chain is a plus
  • Strong planning and execution skills
  • Target oriented and ready to take-up challenges
  • Proficient in Excel
  • Flexible and ready to travel extensively across the Regions
  • Fluent in Amharic and Oromiffa
