We are the BBC’s international development charity. We use the power of media and communication to help reduce poverty around the world. BBC Media Action has been working in Ethiopia since 2001 in the areas of health, resilience, women’s empowerment and livelihoods. 

BBC Media Action is part of an international consortium led by Danish Refugee Council (DRC) to deliver a £21 million program to protect would-be migrants and refugees from unsafe irregular migration through and from the Amhara and Tigray regions of Ethiopia. The 4-year program, funded by the Department for International Development, UK (DFID, UK) will address the barriers to reducing unsafe irregular migration through and from Ethiopia, taking into consideration the most vulnerable groups - women, girls and unaccompanied irregular migrants. The program will coordinate and engage in high level national and regional advocacy with key stakeholders. The program is anticipated to be innovative, cross-sector and solutions-oriented with strong emphasis on research, learning and adaptive management.

BBC Media Action Ethiopia is recruiting a creative and highly motivated Content Producer. We are looking for somebody with creative flair and boundless energy who will make an important contribution to the team’s work.

Overall Purpose of the Job:Under the direct supervision of The Senior Content Producer, the Content Producer shall work with other Producers and the Multimedia teamto produce highly creative, informative and engaging multimedia content for BBC Media Action’s TV, social media pages and other online platforms. 

Applicants will be able to demonstrate a range of production skills and have a working knowledge of content production systems for social media and video production. Flexibility is a key part of this role, the Content Producer will at times take on other roles and duties as directed by the Senior Content Producer. The role will be based in Addis Ababa, with frequent travels torefugee camps in Shire Town, Tigray Region.

Safeguarding

This role will involve working with media partners and volunteers, as well as with vulnerable youth and adult populations. As such, the role will absolutely require effective working knowledge of safeguarding policies and procedures in relation to protection of children and vulnerable adults. For the successful candidate, mandatory training will be provided on BBC Media Action’s safeguarding policy and staff code of conduct. A police background check will form part of the recruitment process. BBC Media Action operates a zero-tolerance policy concerning all forms of abuse and exploitation of vulnerable people.

  • To report directly to Senior Content Producer
  • To explore and pilot different approaches to consistently create engaging multimedia contents 

Key Responsibilities

  • To generate original ideas for content across platform
  • To produce distinctive, original and engaging multimedia contents on a variety of platforms
  • To ensure contents reflect our audiences
  • To work with Outreach team to continually collect feedbacks from ‘Discussion Groups’ to inform future productions
  • Working with Research and Multimedia team to regularly analyze our Social Media pages
  • Deputizing where appropriate for Senior Team Members
  • To embrace new technology and working practices
  • To display open-mindedness and willingness to collaborate and share ideas with colleagues 
  • To comply with the BBC’s policies and to apply the principles when carrying out the role
  • To comply with all relevant BBC safety rules, procedures and guidelines, being aware of responsibilities under BBC safety policies

  • One year (with possibility of extension)

Location:

  • Addis Ababa with frequent travel to Tigray region; refugee camps (May Ayni, Adi Harush and Hitsas) in Shire Town 

Job Requirements

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Proven experience of taking ideas from concept to finished product whilst driving forward creativity
  • A good communicator with excellent interpersonal skills, capable of sharing and inspiring ideas and originality, while remaining open to the ideas of others
  • Committed to change and continuous improvement
  • Able to work under pressure, to demanding deadlines and with demanding people, to the highest professional standards
  • A thorough knowledge of BBC editorial guidelines and other compliance policies, or has the desire to glean this knowledge quickly
  • Understanding of the importance of the BBC’s values in accuracy and impartiality
  • Proficiency in production techniques such as self-shooting and video editing is an advantage 

Required knowledge and experience:

  • Diploma and at least two years relevant experience in multimedia production
  • Proven multimedia production background, preferably in the area of behavior and social change communication/journalism
  • Proven ability to analyze and critically evaluate editorial content, identifying strengths and weaknesses in program content and driving constant improvement in output
  • Experience working in the field, especially in rural communities
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and influencing skills
  • Evidence of imagination and an enthusiasm for generating new ideas, particularly those with the widest possible audience appeal
  • Fluency in Tigrigna is essential
  • Functional written and spoken English
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office packages i.e. Microsoft word, PowerPoint etc..
