We are the BBC’s international development charity. We use the power of media and communication to help reduce poverty around the world. BBC Media Action has been working in Ethiopia since 2001 in the areas of health, resilience, women’s empowerment and livelihoods. 

BBC Media Action is part of an international consortium led by Danish Refugee Council (DRC) to deliver a £21 million program to protect would-be migrants and refugees form unsafe irregular migration through and from the Amhara, Tigray and Somali regions of Ethiopia. The 4-year program, funded by the Department for International Development, UK (DFID, UK) will address the barriers to reducing unsafe irregular migration through and from Ethiopia, taking into consideration the most vulnerable groups - women, girls and unaccompanied irregular migrants. The program will coordinate and engage in high level national and regional advocacy with key stakeholders. The program is anticipated to be innovative, cross-sectoral and solutions-oriented with strong emphasis on research, learning and adaptive management.

Safeguarding

This role will involve working with partners and volunteers, as well as with vulnerable youth and adult populations. As such, the role will absolutely require effective working knowledge of safeguarding policies and procedures in relation to protection of children and vulnerable adults. For the successful candidate, mandatory training will be provided on BBC Media Action’s safeguarding policy and staff code of conduct. A police background check will form part of the recruitment process. BBC Media Action operates a zero-tolerance policy concerning all forms of abuse and exploitation of vulnerable people

Overall Purpose of Job

The Outreach Officer will be responsible for, in coordination with the Senior Outreach Officer, planning and delivering the outreach activities of Ethiopian Migration Program in North Wolo, and North Gondar - Metema.

Reporting to the Senior Outreach Officer, the purpose of the role is to ensure timely preparation of outreach and communication materials, delivery of outreach training and support discussion/ watching groups in North Wolo and North Gondar Zones according to schedule and to the required standards of the BBC Media Action.

Main Duties:

  • Establish and organize discussion/watching groups in North Wolo woredas, Gubalafto Habru, Kobo, North Gondar and Metema.
  • Provide and assist on facilitation training for moderators/facilitators for watching/discussion groups.
  • Follow up and facilitate the development of outreach and communication martial,
  • Establish smooth working relationships with partners, government and nongovernment organization at woreda level, for effective running of discussion/watching group activities.
  • Closely monitor the listening groups to ensure the quality of discussions are meeting the objectives of the project
  • Assist on design and facilitate the development of outreach and Communication materials.
  • The Outreach Officer Ensure the proper dissemination and of the PSA’s discussions, screening and facilitation and organization of forum theater.
  • Be willing to learn recording techniques to collect and record stories for social media and TV/PSA and TV show
  • Effectively manage the expenses of discussion/watching groups, facilitators and incentive workers in the caps according to BBC Media Action financial procedures.
  • Collect reports and feedback from discussion/ watching groups every month.
  • Analyze feedback coming from the discussion/watching groups and submit to production team for input into our TV/ show, PSA and forum theater designing.
  • Manage and compile data and feedback coming from the discussion and viewer groups group.
  • Other duties can be assigned as required.

Job Requirements

Skills, Knowledge and Experience:

  • First Degree in any field of Social Sciences.
  • At least 2 years’ experience in community mobilization at grassroots level.
  • Designing and developing communication and training materials is an advantage.
  • Experience working on media and communications is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of refugee’s camp setup is an advantage
  • Strong interpersonal and community facilitation skills.
  • Fluency in spoken and written in English and Amharic
  • Experience providing training, specifically facilitation training strongly desired.
  • Strong commitment to, and understanding of, development issues in Ethiopia.
