Context of the mission

Médecins du Monde- France (MDM-F) is operating in Ethiopia since 1986 in different types of health projects from long-term interventions to emergency response.

Currently, the regional focus is on Afar Region which, together with Somali Region, is among the poorest states in Ethiopia. An AWD project recently ended and a program of healthcare provision for sex workers will run here until 2021. In the Somali region, MDM is launching a new project including health (SRH) activities as well as Nutrition and WASH in Nut activities through a local partner.

Essential Duties

Under the direct responsibility of the General Coordinator and with the support of the Logistics Referent in HQ, She/he will be responsible for:

  • Ensure the respect of MDM and donor Logistics guidelines (management of purchase, stock, supply, equipment, vehicle) on the mission
  • Opening/shut down at logistical level any MDM base in the country and ensure their regular maintenance
  • Supervise and provide a logistical support to the different MDM bases and projects run into the country
  • Ensure the respect of MDM security guidelines on the mission
  • Coordinate the logistics activities all over the mission by being in support and in close collaboration with the project and support staff
  • Manage directly the logistics in the serval project 
  • Report on regular basis about all logistics activities within the mission to the General Coordinator

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Identify and plan the mission purchases in collaboration with field logisticians and Project Managers
  • Ensure regular purchases follow up in close collaboration with the Administration Department for down payments and monthly budget follow up.
  • Provides logistical support to medical department to ensure adequate storing, packing and pharmacy management.
  • Plan the stock supplying according to local constraints;
  • Ensures the good storage of all items, including food for nutritional activities according to needs and protocols.
  • Manage regular inventory (monthly, quarterly, yearly) for the different items stored within the mission;
  • In charge of the warehouse management and control system
  • Supervise the general follow up of the mission vehicles (consummation checks, movement planning, etc.)
  • Ensure a regular maintenance on the different vehicle of the mission, setup appropriate maintenance contract with supplier or ensure an appropriate repair process with local technicians ;
  • Define the more relevant means of transport for goods delivery and process the administrative formalities related to (by road, by plane, by boat, importation, etc.).
  • Ensures that communication means in the mission have the required level and quality.
  • Ensure that the computers and network maintenance is followed.
  • Ensures there is a regular follow up and on-time diagnosis of the sanitary situation in MDM working areas and in the area where beneficiaries live.
  • Supervises the construction and rehabilitation of all buildings or structures related to MDM activities in the mission
  • Participates in any emergency activity or exploratory visit in or out of the MDM area of work, being prepared to intervene directly and assume the management of logistics activities and staff
  • Ensure the respect of the security guideline adopted on the mission, the good functioning of the relative tools and process and the correct use and acknowledge from all the members of the mission (national & international staff) in close links with the General Coordinator;
  • Centralize all logistics information available on the mission and consolidate a monthly report (into the proper reporting form) to be delivered to the General Coordinator & the HQ Technical Referent.

Hierarchical & Functional links

The Logistic Coordinator will be based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Under the direct responsibility of the General Coordinator and with the support of the Logistics Referent in HQ.  She/he will technically manage logistics staff in capital, logistics manager Garbo and Log Admin field officer in Semera with the collaboration of the mission coordination team members. She/he is the technical reference person for all project logistics staff.

Contract duration:

  • 6 months with possibility of extension, start immediately

Duty station:

  • Addis Ababa, with movements to MDM project in Ethiopia

Job Requirements

Expected profile

  • BA/MA in related field of study with combination of relevant training and practical experience.
  • Four years of progressively responsible professional work experience in humanitarian emergency response and coordination.
  • Fluent in Amharic and English, ideally also knowledge of other languages likes French and Somali
  • Flexibility, reactivity, anticipation, adaptability
  • Driving license
  • Good organizational skills in day to day and crisis situation
  • Ability to work quickly, under pressure, and with short deadlines,
  • Excellent computer and reporting skills
  • Good communication and negotiations skills
  • Ability to classify and manage priorities - High autonomous is required
  • Interest and ability to work in a team
  • Capacity to work and to live remote area with intense conditions
