Job Summary

To manage the two Packaging production lines in an efficient, safe and low-cost manner and to lead Packaging employees in completing all tasks in terms of policies, procedures and processes to deliver production volumes and production quality as planned.  To manage packaging related stores ensuring availability and cost control.

 KEY RESULT AREAS AND OUTCOMES

OUTPUTS/ EXPECTED RESULTS

Production Volumes & Quality

  • Responsible for production volumes according to plan and the fulfilment of alternative production orders as required
  • Efficiently allocate personnel within required personnel allocation standards, so as to ensure smooth production
  • Ensure uncompromising compliance with quality standards
  • Report on and resolve quality issues
  • Compile production reports as required
  • Review production performance and report on progress with problem solving to the Supply Chain Director
  • Take measures to ensure accomplishment of KPIs as required
  • Solve daily equipment problems, and work with the Maintenance Manager to ensure equipment is maintained at a high level of performance

Equipment Utilisation & Line Efficiency

  • Schedule weekly maintenance and sanitation in consultation with the Maintenance Manager
  • Plan and co-ordinate annual overhaul in conjunction with the Maintenance Manager
  • Monitor the performance of packaging lines through equipment efficiency, mechanical efficiency and down time analysis reports
  • Monitor manpower utilisation paying attention to absenteeism, late coming and overtime levels
  • Lead the implementation of continuous improvement practices through programs such as 5S, Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), World Class Manufacturing (WCM)duction and Lean Manufacturing

Safety, Health & Environment

  • Ensure compliance with all SHE policies, standards and requirements
  • Responsible for the SHE behaviors and achievements of employees in the Packaging Department - ensure all employees are aware of risks related to their jobs and abide by relevant rules
  • Carry out sufficient risk evaluation in Packaging, ensuring employee and stakeholder involvement
  • In conjunction with the SHE Manager, responsible for the availability of required PPE for employees and visitors to the Packaging hall
  • Periodically perform SHE checks to ensure existing and potential SHE problems are discovered, and improvement measures executed
  • Report on accidents and near accidents and ensure effective improvement measures are taken
  • Ensure that annual, quarterly and monthly performance indicators of all employees contain SHE related KPIs
  • Responsible for compilation, updating and training in connection with SOPs of each position, and take measures to ensure compliance
  • Responsible for enhancing safety performance, accelerating construction of safety culture, and continually improving safety of equipment, environment and personal behaviors

Stores Management

  • Monitor stock levels of all packaging raw materials
  • Control usage of materials
  • Take corrective action when any KPI deviates from target
  • Report weekly and monthly on KPIs

People Management

  • Develop annual, monthly and weekly manpower plans to achieve planned production
  • Ensure vacancies are swiftly filled to minimise disruptions to production
  • Provide competency development for Packaging employees through training and coaching
  • Ensure implementation of individual and team goals
  • Manage employee performance by communicating performance targets, tracking performance and providing regular performance feedback
  • Manage discipline and grievances in terms of the Disciplinary Code & Grievance Procedure
  • Develop sound relationships with Union representatives with an emphasis on transparency, communication and joint problem-solving

DECISION MAKING POWERS AND AUTHORITY

Incumbent is expected to support the Supply Chain Director in developing and implementing production policies, procedures and processes.  Responsible for setting and managing the Packaging budget within clear guidelines and rules.  Has the authority to make staff appointments based on the advice and support of HR.  May make recommendations on employee terminations following the completion of required procedures.

Job Requirements

COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS

Education:

  • Min: Appropriate technical qualification
  • Ideal: Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering or science degree or its equivalent

Legal:                   

  • Min: National ID

Training:             

  • Min: Computer training, SHE training

Experience:      

  • Min: 5 years’ experience in a similar position
  • Ideal: 7 years’ experience in a similar position
