Summary Scope of Work

Jhpiego through GIZ funded capacity building project has agreed to support health science and biomedical technician colleges in West Oromia and Addis Ababa; and their student practice sites (health facilities and biomedical workshops) to improve quality of nursing, midwifery and biomedical technician education programs. The Project is mandated to develop teaching and student assessment skills of faculty and preceptors at Nekemte Health Sciences College (NHSC), Nekemte Specialized Hospital (NSH), Nekemte Polytechnic College (NPTC), the Tegbare-id Polytechnic College in Addis Ababa (AATPTC) and others. It also wants to improve infection prevention and hygiene practices at clinical practice sites.

Nursing Education Advisor conducts a faculty development program for nursing instructors, a preceptorship courses for clinical instructors/preceptors of nursing education programs, and infection prevention and patient safety training for preceptors at the hospitals. Coaching and mentoring support will be provided to assist trained staff if the nursing programs in applying their learning to improve education and practice. She/he is expected to develop quality plans, budgets, reports and deliverables. She/he is required to maintain sound working relationships with relevant stakeholders, donor, project sites and works closely with relevant agencies at federal and regional levels.

Specific Duties and responsibilities

  • Conduct a faculty development programs and provide onsite coaching to develop teaching and student performance assessment skills of nursing, midwifery and biomedical technician instructors (including deans and department heads) at NHSC, NPTC, AATPTC, and other surrounding colleges.
  • Conduct a preceptorship course and onsite coaching support to develop training skills of preceptors (nurses, midwives and biomedical technicians) at Nekemte Specialized Hospital Wollega University Referral hospital, the regional biomedical equipment workshop, and other cooperative training sites.
  • Support beneficiary institutions in developing and using objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) for nursing and midwifery programs; and objective structured practical examination (OSPE) for biomedical technician training programs.
  • Support beneficiary institutions in developing student clinical practice objectives for nursing and midwifery programs; and practical biomedical technician training programs.
  • Conduct and support institutions to develop infection prevention and patient safety skills of preceptors (including directors, matrons and quality improvement focal persons) at Nekemte Specialized Hospital , Wollega University Referral Hospital and other cooperative training sites.
  • Work with GIZ, FMOH, RHBs and ZHBs, NHSC, NPTC, AATPTC, and other surrounding colleges to assist the utilization of trained faculty for improving the quality of training;
  • Promote the use of standardized training packages for cascading into other programs
  • Be role model and develop the skills of staff at NHSC, NPTC, AATPTC, and other surrounding colleges for improving performance through relevant training, coaching and advisory role  
  • Facilitate competency-based training in key pedagogic areas like effective teaching skills, simulation training and instructional design skills;
  • Assess the ongoing needs in both technical assistance and capacity building training need and work to meet the needs either using Jhpiego resources or by coordinating and leveraging support from other parties, and actively coordinate support to individual institutions with relevant organizations;
  • Work jointly with the Program Officer to coordinate planning and scheduling of activities,
  • Guide the work of Program Assistants and ensure that logistical support is available for the smooth implementation of events and activities as well as the overall operations of the project
  • Supervise and provide regular support, guidance and mentoring to the staff’s at NHSC, NPTC, AATPTC, and other surrounding colleges and practice sites.
  • Participate in the development of work plans, implementation and training plans, quarterly reports and other program deliverables;
  • Monitor program outputs and results related to PSE & IST, and work closely with Program Officer and M&E Advisor to ensure that these are documented and reported accurately. Compile additional documentation, such as case studies or special reports when indicated;
  • Provide support to other Jhpiego programs when deemed necessary;

 


Job Requirements

Required Skills & Abilities:                                                                                                                  

  • Ability to work in a complex environment with multiple tasks, short deadlines and intense pressure to perform;
  • Effective communication in English and Amharic (written and oral) with strong presentation and writing skills; 
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with national and international staff and partners, and flexible;
  • Computer Literacy (Word, Excel and power point);
  • Ability to travel up to 40% of the time. 
  •  Ability to speak and write Afan Oromo language would be  preferable.

 

Required qualifications and competencies:

  • Graduate degree in nursing, midwifery, public health, or other related fields (preferably nursing background) 
  • Minimum of 3 years in in higher education system, focus to health education and system strengthening is advantageous, with recent clinical experience and in an NGO setting with international donors, and organizing and delivering competency based training;
  • Qualified clinical health care provider (Health officer, Nurse, Midwifery), and an in-depth understanding of TVET and higher education system in the country;
  • Understanding of performance quality improvement issues and approaches in a clinical setting; in-service and pre-service education and training, etc. 
  • Experience of training, coaching, and mentoring health professionals
  • Capacity of excellent interaction, persuasive and team player attitude;
  • Familiarity with Ethiopian Health system and newly designed business process
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
