Hope for Justice is recruiting for the following position in Addis Ababa Lydia Lighthouse:

Head of Social Worker Department

The Head of Social Worker Department will be responsible to ensure the quality and consistency of social work services provided at Lydia Lighthouse through supervision and leadership of the SW team, help children deal with past trauma/abuse/abandonment so they can rebuild their lives and look to the future, help children develop positive social skills and behaviour, learning non-violent ways of expressing emotions, especially anger/frustration, and growing in self-worth and self-esteem. In addition, she will be responsible for family tracing and supporting girls to reunify with their families or reintegrate to alternative care. Accurate and timely documentation of services provided to the girls is essential. Hope for Justice has a rigorous Child Safeguarding policy that all staff are required to comply with.

Major Duties and Responsbilities:

  • Provide individual supervision to social workers on a monthly basis and report any significant issues to the Project Manager of Lydia Lighthouse
  • Organise monthly social work meetings and record the minutes and action plans and send to the Project Manager of Lydia Lighthouse
  • Plan the reunification/reintegration and follow up program each month and send to Project Manager and CPD.
  • Monitor the quality and consistency of SW services provided to the children to ensure that Hope for Justice’s minimum standards are met and that children receive the services they require
  • Provide children on your caseload with regular one-to-one counselling sessions
  • Provide children with group discussion/counselling sessions and creative therapies to learn positive behaviour, relationship skills, non-violent ways of expressing their emotions, other 'life-skills' and plan for their future
  • Help children to develop a plan for the future and the emotional/psycho-social skills to implement it
  • Participate in regular child care reviews to assess the progress of children through the Hope for Justice program
  • Travel to rural areas to reunify/reintegrate children and follow them up
  • Provide families/carers during the reintegration process with training in effective parenting and child protection as well as emotional/psycho-social support to care for their children within the family.
  • Provide families/carers with IGA grant and small business skills training to strengthen the families’ economic stability if necessary.
  • Provide older children/youth who growing in independence and learning skills with support to manage their own lives independently
  • Provide life skills training sessions for children and youth
  • Refer children for other professional services if this is required (e.g. psychiatric or psychological assessment or treatment)

Duration of contract:

  • 1 year with possibility of extension

Job Requirements

Qualifications: 

  • Degree in psychology or social work

Work Experience: 

  • At least 4 years of experience working as social worker, preferrably with an NGO

General Skills:

  • Ability to manage and lead other staff members
  • Ability to work with children from all backgrounds
  • Ability to be empathetic and have an understanding of the issues surrounding street children
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and fluency in Amharic and English
  • Professionalism in approach to work
  • Flexibility to cope with unexpected situations
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English and Amharic
  • Ability to document all services provided to children
  • Ability to work within the Christian ethos of Hope for Justice and promote this when required.
