Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)
Main purpose of job:

To help support the development of UK-Ethiopia ties beyond Government to Government relations, by building new links in education, culture and sport in support of wider UK objectives in Addis and Ethiopia’s regions. The job holder will also improve the Embassy’s link with returning Ethiopian diaspora. The role will also help deliver and administer a range of programming aimed at supporting these objectives.

Roles and responsibilities:
  • The UK’s Embassy in Addis Ababa is one of our largest in Africa, and the development programme run from within it is our biggest on the continent. The UK also works closely with the Government of Ethiopia on matters of regional and international security, and in promoting economic reform and protecting human rights.
  • We are proud of our longstanding bilateral relationship with Ethiopia and committed to continuing to support the country in these important times. As part of that we are broadening our approach to increase our cultural and people-to-people links across Ethiopia. This new role, which sits within the Communications, Engagement and Soft Power Team is designed to support that effort.
  • The successful candidate’s primary role will be to support the team in building links between non-governmental organisations in the UK and Ethiopia that support wider UK objectives in Ethiopia and promote greater cultural exchange. Building on existing (but limited) university links, and pilot programmes between the English Football Association and the British Library and their Ethiopian counterparts, the jobholder will be expected to spot new opportunities, engage the relevant Ethiopian organisations and then deliver small scale projects to facilitate collaboration. The job holder with help ensure this effort expands beyond Addis to cover Ethiopia’s regions. In all of this they will need to have a sharp eye for communications, working with digital and press officers to maximise the public impact of UK engagement and line managing an assistant visits and events officer to run high quality, high impact events at the beautiful British Embassy.
  • The jobholder will also play a vital role in administering several high-profile campaigns aimed at increasing the UK’s soft power reach. Strong organisational skills and some budget experience would be advantageous.
  • This all adds up to an interesting and, we hope, fun job. The successful candidate will need to be someone with strong people skills, externally able to build networks and develop partnerships with them that are influential for the UK, and internally to work with teams right across the Embassy to make sure those partnerships work for our overall objectives. They’ll need to be well organised and efficient – able to move swiftly between different parts of their portfolio and deliver programmes to time and budget.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience
  • At least 3 years’ working experience.
  • Knowledge of Ethiopia’s cultural institutions and third sector (universities, arts and culture, sport etc).
  • Fluent English & Amharic is essential.

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience
  • Knowledge of other Ethiopian languages is advantageous
