Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the overall supervision of the Project Manager, Accelerating the Ratification and Domestication of African Union Treaties project, the legal drafter will undertake the following tasks:

 

  1. Support the organization, coordination and implementation of all project activities including:

Conduct document review as requested;

Amend draft legal documents and instruments to incorporate feedback from stakeholders and submit notes outlining decisions made in the drafting process;

Prepare background materials, reports and papers;

Participate in the preparation and facilitation of workshops/training activities and prepares reports on activities;

Attend meetings and take minutes;

Elaborate project progress reports including quarterly, annual and final reports.

  1. Assist Member States with drafting of legal instruments, such as draft national laws, policies, internal regulations and rules or other legislative materials to accelerate ratification / accession and domestication of OAU / AU treaties:

Provide legal and technical inputs into the drafting, revising and editing of legal documents and instruments;

Draft legal documents and instruments in clear wording and sufficiently detailed to facilitate easy, unambiguous interpretation;

Provide preliminary interpretation of legal instruments, such as constitutions, statutes, treaties, agreements, regulations and rules, resolutions or other relevant legal materials;

III. In accordance with predetermined guidelines, undertake studies, carry out research, prepare drafts and examine precedents on legal issues relating, among others, to the diverse continental legal systems, and the ratification and domestication of AU treaties:

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Law or Political Science or International Relations.

Master’s degree in Law or similar Sciences Master’s degree will be an advantage and preferred.

Experience:

Ideally at least 2 years of relevant professional experience at the national or international level; (4 years if only in possession of Bachelor’s Degree).

Extensive experience in legal drafting and reporting skills in Arabic/English.

Experience in aligning different linguistic texts of treaties.

Language Requirements:

Proficiency in English.

Proficiency in Arabic language.

Working knowledge of other UN language desirable.

Other:

Knowledge of the International and African Union regional human rights frameworks.

Ability to work and deal with sensitive issues in a multi-cultural environment and to build effective working relations with colleagues.

Excellent and demonstrated research skills.

Competence in the use of standard Microsoft Office Suite applications.
