Who we are

SOS Children’s Villages Ethiopia is an International Non-governmental organization and a member of SOS Children’s Villages International Federation. We started our humanitarian work in Ethiopia with the opening of our first Village in Mekelle, Northern part of Ethiopia in 1974. Since then, we have expanded our programs  to different regions where there are significant needs for intervention and where we believe we can work in partnership with all relevant  actors to bring  sustainable  positive outcomes for children’s and young people.

Today, we have grown significantly to meet the persistent challenges that confront Ethiopian children who have lost parental care and those that are at risk of losing their parental care. Working in close collaboration with international donors, local government and community based organizations across seven program locations; we aspire that every child grows up with love, respect and security.

Project Introduction

SOS Children’s Villages Ethiopia (SOS CVE) together with our local partner OWDA will provide FSL, WASH and Health in Gode town, Kelafo, and Adadle woredas in the Shebele Zone -areas with deep food insecurity, where social and health services are mainly closed, and few other humanitarian actors are present.

The project will focus on the provision of food via vouchers, hygiene promotion and awareness, critical WASH infrastructure and health care services. The intervention aims at providing Mental Health and Psycho Social Support (including treatment for SGBV victims) and improving the protection environment especially for children and women by mainstreaming protection across all activities.

We are looking for an Emergency WASH Promotion Officer who will be responsible for the delivery of effective and high quality Emergency WASH promotion & support to COVID-19 affected community in the project intervention sites.

Your role....

As a for an Emergency WASH Promotion, you will be in charge of the following:

  • Providing water, sanitation and hygiene related sectoral leadership and expertise in relevant needs assessments and analysis
  • Ensuring the proper dissemination of hygiene and sanitation messages to the community at grass root level
  • Organizing community level hygiene awareness campaigns and prevention of AWD out breaks and COVID-19 pandemic
  • Selecting and designing the most appropriate form of sanitation system
  • Representing the organization’s emergency WASH Promotion program at zonal and Gode city administration level and ensuring a positive collaboration and working relationship with pertinent government offices and a public image of the organization.
  • Actively participating in zonal and Gode city administration based Task-force meetings,
  • Planning and implementing  emergency WASH Promotion activities, and closely monitoring, evaluating
  • Supervising and monitoring of water supply structures (Birkads and wells). Dealing issues with contractors and local Forman’s.
  • Identifying  water supply construction sites, mapping, designing and developing BOQ for the identified water supply structures
  • Establishing community level WASH committees and improving their capacity to manage and control water points
  • Advising on sound decisions related to technical complications encountered on site
  • Assist in the preparation of simple, sustainable operation and maintenance plans and procedures for implementation and exit strategy at community level.
  • Facilitating community/institutional linkages during all project stages.
  • Assisting projects in on-going assessment of existing water sources Somali regional state with Regional stakeholders.
  • Conducting water quality assessments and disinfecting sources as required.
  • Coordinating detailed hydrological and environmental assessments in order to map areas requiring new water sources.
  • Compiling and submitting monthly,  quarterly and yearly WASH related activities progress reports to project coordinator and Location Program Director, participate on Dyer and Gu multi-agency seasonal assessments

 

Job Requirements

Must have:            

  • B.SC Degree in Water/Public Health/Sanitation/Environmental health
  • Experience : Minimum 3 years of experience in working for Emergency WASH Promotion Project
  • Ability to work in extreme weather conditions and harsh environment
  • Experience in community mobilization
  • Experience in managing the emergency water tracking projects in the region
  • Operational knowledge of Microsoft Office software, AutoCAD, Archi CAD, GIS and Water Cad, Epanet
  • Ability to work closely, professionally, and constructively with all others regardless of nationality, ethnicity, gender, religion, race, tribe, or cultural background
  • Experience in emergency response, including rapid assessments and needs analysis
  • Profound cross-cultural awareness and sound knowledge of public health issues
  •  Ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions independently
  •  Ability to cope with stressful situations and frustrations
  •  Ability to relate to and motivate local staff effectively
  •  Creativity and the ability to work with limited resources
  • Fluency in English & Somali (both oral and written skills) Excellent organizational and problem solving skills
  • Local  knowledge in terms of its culture, economic and social trends is compulsory
