Job Description

We are looking for an experienced Legal and Compliance Officer to ensure our company adheres to legal standards and in-house policies. He/she will be responsible for enforcing regulations in all aspects and levels of business as well as provide guidance on compliance matters.

A great legal and Compliance Officer is well-versed in legal guidelines and corporate governance best practices. They are professionals of high ethical standards and work diligently to complete their duties keeping in mind the objectives of the business. He/she must be comfortable saying “no” when necessary and be result-oriented.

The Legal Compliance Officer will support the integrity and efficiency of the organization’s operations, and compliance with Ethiopian Federal and Local laws, Regulations and Directives and relevant international laws,( export and supply chain issues) He/she will support the development, implementation, enhancement, and revision of a Corporate Compliance Program within the framework of Company’s risk management. 

The goal is to preserve the company’s integrity by making sure it stays on a lawful and ethical courses

Legal & Compliance Officer Job Duties:

  • Develop and oversee control systems to prevent or deal with violations of legal guidelines and internal policies
  • Evaluate the efficiency of controls and improve them continuously
  • Revise procedures, reports etc. periodically to identify hidden risks or non-conformity issues
  • Draft, modify and implement company policies and procedures
  • Collaborate with corporate counsels and HR departments to monitor enforcement of standards and regulations
  • Assess the business’s future ventures to identify possible compliance risks
  • Review the work of colleagues when necessary to identify compliance issues and provide advice or training
  • Keep well-informed of regulatory developments within or outside of the company as well as evolving best practices in compliance control
  • Prepare reports for the Head 
  • Developing and implementing an effective legal compliance program
  • Proactively auditing processes, practices and documents
  • Educating and training employees.
  • Assist the Head by helping to develop or revise policies and procedures related to all compliance areas.
  •  Maintain a current working knowledge of Federal and State regulations and policies;
  • Research relevant new laws, regulations/policies, changes in laws, regulations/policies and the; regulatory environment, employment labor, benefits, and tax laws;
  • Assist BUs, Departments and others in ensuring compliance with federal and state relevant laws and other requirements
  • Complete and oversee compliance of registration requirements and ensure required reports are accurate, submitted on time, and any yearly or other fees are paid on time;
  • Assist the General Counsel in designing and administering Corporate Compliance Program. The program will include a plan for training to prevent illegal, unethical or improper behaviour and clear reports to management on the status of compliance.
  •  Assist the Head in setting and maintaining: the organizational standards for the development of terms and conditions in all Contracts/ agreement-related templates; compliance checklists; agreement readings – examining the contractual and compliance elements of the schedule of the agreement, the clauses/provisions and the special requirements;  interpretation of terms and conditions (Templates to be developed by the Senior Contract Officer);
  • Assist the Head in lodging claims, disputes, and terminations of Company contracts/agreements.
  • Develop and maintain a list of all Company’s offices’ and Warehouse leases, start and end date of the lease, and monitor Company’s compliance with legal requirements.

Job Requirements

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

  • Proven experience as Legal and Compliance Officer
  •  In-depth knowledge of the industry’s standards and regulations
  • Excellent knowledge of reporting procedures and record keeping
  • A business acumen partnered with a dedication to legality
  • Methodical and diligent with outstanding planning abilities
  •  An analytical mind able to “see” the complexities of procedures and regulations
  •  Excellent communication skills.
  • LLB degree with relevant experience of at least 4 years in, Legal and Compliance Officer, Justice, Public Prosecutor, Attorney, Legal Advice or LLM with 2 years’ experience (mentioned above).

Knowledge and Skills

  • Demonstrated expertise with legal research and excellent writing skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of federal, state and local laws both specific to Business operations as well as general corporate and employment.
  • Knowledge and demonstrated experience in interpreting Federal regulations related to government contracting and assistance awards.
  • Comprehensive computer skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite applications including Word and Internet Explorer required. Knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Google apps helpful.
  • Solid organizational skills; ability to organize and support multiple projects and a multi-faceted workload, and meet strict deadlines in a fast-paced, detail-oriented environment.
  • Knowledge of filing systems helpful.

  • Demonstrated competence to handle a variety of activities in a time-sensitive environment with attention to detail and quality.
  • Patience and flexible work attitude; ability to work productively in a team environment as well as independently; ability to take initiative and work pro-actively and with minimal guidance. 

Physical Requirements:

  •  Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the company standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
