Job Description
Senior Research Assistant to work in the Agricultural Transformation and Rural Development Research Center specifically for a research project titled “Agricultural growth, Transformation and poverty reduction in Ethiopia”. The RA will be responsible to produce high quality research reports using data from different sources and applying various economic techniques under supervision by PIs.
Principal duties and responsibility
- Update existing CSA crop and livestock output and input use data for the 2000/01-2018/19 period. Where updating is not the case, carry on the full data organization and analyses for the period 2000/01-2018/19.
- Accessing secondary data across years from various institutions (CSA, Custom, MoI, MoA, WB, Disaster prevention and Preparedness, etc)
- Organizing data for production and productivity analyses (variables to be defined) using 15 years CSA data (2004/05-2018/19)
- Agricultural Gross Domestic Product (AGDP)
- Agricultural production and productivity:
- Organizing price data of inputs and outputs
- Growth accounting analyses: considering such factors as labor, capital, land fertilizer, improved seeds, pesticides, irrigation, services, returns to scale, rural roads and TFP for each year over 15 years (with support from the project PIs).
- The Welfare Monitoring Survey (WMS), the Household Consumption and Expenditure Survey (HCES), and the Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) plus indicators for concepts such as stunting and wasting, diet diversity and nutrient adequacy or food insecurity have proliferated in past 15 or 20 years. The extracted data will focus on the following areas
National assessment on
- Gross domestic product per capital, population growth trends, food insecure population and Food supply (total production, import, stocks, food aid, export)
- Dietary energy in the food supply (kcal/capita, or pct of requirements)
- Dietary quality of the food supply (g/cap of each nutrient or food)
- Diversity of food supply (Shannon indexes of attributes or sources)
- Variability of the food supply (std. deviations of kcal/capita over time)
- Public expenditure (pct of spending, or specific commitments)
- Market observations
- Household or individual recall
- Anthropometric measures
- Prevalence and depth of undernourishment
- Biomarkers and clinical data
- Breastfeeding and sanitation
- Composite indexes and multidimensional measures
Job Requirement
- Master’s Degree/preferably PhD in Economics, Agricultural economics, statistics and related fields from a recognized university;
- Minimum of five years’ experience in research and policy analysis in agriculture and rural development/economic development/Agricultural Economics;
- Has established reputation on his/her previous engagement with PSI/EDRI or with equivalent research institute.
- English language proficiency and strong communication and writing skill; And excellent knowledge on STATA, SPSS are highly required
