Background

Population Health and Environment Ethiopia Consortium (PHE-EC) is a non- governmental organization established in Ethiopia in 2008. The consortium has been established with a vision “to see Ethiopia with a sustainable use of resources, resilient ecosystems, sustainable livelihoods, and a healthy population”. The organization has also a mission “to contribute to sustainable development in Ethiopia by promoting and enhancing the integration of population, health and environment through multi-sectoral approaches”.

PHEEC by establishing a partnership with Afromontane Biodiversity Conservation in Ethiopia (ABCE), is initiating a new project in Guassa with the support from Karl Kübel Stiftung für Kind und Familie (KKS). The project is entitled : :IMPROVING THE LIVING CONDITIONS OF THE POOR IN 7 VILLAGES IN GUASSA BY HARMONIZING EFFORTS FOR FOOD SECURITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY”. It intends to contribute to improve the livelihood of the community residing around Guassa community conservation area.

To effectively integrate social issues in this environmentally friendly livelihood improvement, PHE-EC is looking for qualified and high caliber social development officer that meets the requirements listed below. The social development officer will be responsible to effectively integrate social, environmental and economic aspects in project interventions in the 7 villages targeted by the project.  

Purpose

The social development officer will coordinate social interventions with environmental and economic activities and ensure sustainable livelihood improvements of targeted communities with due consideration of timelines in delivering results. He/she will also be responsible in ensuring appropriate tracking of project results towards complementing the achievement of the organization’s mission and vision through imparting new values and innovations into the PHEEC’s interventions.

Dimensions of the PHE EC’s Responsibilities

The roles and responsibilities of the social development officer will fall into the following dimensions:

  •  Establishing platforms in which multi-sectoral interventions will be realized in the project area
  • Effectively use PHE EC’s behavioral communication instruments to bring behavioral change among targeted community
  • Engage with vocational trainings to ensure viable job creation for youth groups
  • Overall engagement with all project activities
  • Financial Management
  • Networking and partnership

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications, Experiences and skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Sociology, public health, economics, environmental economics or related fields
  • At least 3-5 years practical experience in related programs
  • Strong interest and commitment in gender equality, women empowerment, household resilience, environmental conservation and management
  • Advantageous to have experience in implementing projects with behavioral communication component
  • Experience in joint Project implementation
  • Excellent computer skills, especially in Microsoft word, Excel, power point and other MS Office.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in Amharic and English
  • Excellent experience of Working with Team
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to work effectively with internal/external partners and promote collaboration in a multi-stakeholder environment.
  • Able to work under stressful environment and deliver results timely
  • Self initiator and undertake duties with little supervision
