The Fred Hollows Foundation, an international NGO founded in 1992 has been a driving force in the development and implementation of blindness prevention programs in some of the poorest and most isolated regions in the world. Currently operating in over 25 countries throughout Africa, Asia, Australia and Middle East. The Foundation is working to end avoidable blindness.

Ethiopia is one of The Foundations largest funded programs, focused on the Elimination of Trachoma. Up until now, our program has focused on the complex and direct delivery of services to help those in need. With strong foundations in place, we are now looking to enter into a new phase of our programming building on the work that we have already done.

About the Position

Reporting to the Finance Manager, the Finance & Grants Officer is responsible for the preparation of financial reporting and accounting duties of The Fred Hollows Foundation Ethiopia. Working closely with the Finance Manager, you will provide support across all financial functions ensuring compliance with FHF Finance, Procurement and Logistic policies and procedures, as well as Donor and Government requirements.

Specific areas of responsibilities include: 

  • Maintain up-to-date accounting records that are relevant, reliable, objective and understandable.
  • Ensure financial transactions are adequately documented, reviewed and validated before input into the financial management system (SUN) system for data quality and coding accuracy of transactions.
  • Post entries to the accounting software in a timely manner.
  • Ensure a backup and retention procedure is in place and followed for all accounting records/data/documents.
  • Perform all accounts including ensuring that cash, payables and receivables are reconciled on a timely basis
  • Review all procurement transactions to ensure adequate supporting documentation, accuracy of amounts and control overpayments.
  • Prepare and attend to the needs of auditors by way of participating in pre-audit meetings, prepare audit schedules as per checklist made available and any other pertinent supporting analysis
  • Check and ensure that all monthly tax payments, statutory & regulatory deductions and other returns are accurate, complete as well as remitted in a timely manner.
  • Ensure timely preparation of tax returns and other forms to tax authorities for review by finance manager prior to submission.
  • Liaison with local government to ensure compliance with tax regulations, pension payment and other requirements.
  • Ensure full financial compliance with donor, government, legal and FHF requirements

Job Requirements

To be successful in this role, we are seeking someone with the following experience and skills

  • At least 5 years of working experience in a similar role within a recognized NGO.
  • BA Degree in Accounting and/or Finance
  • High level of computer literacy with sound knowledge of financial accounting software and spreadsheet packages.
  • Solid knowledge of full-cycle accounting principles, financial systems, budget/cash-flow monitoring and internal accounting controls.
  • Knowledge and use of SUN systems.
  • Sound knowledge of current legislation and regulatory requirements relevant to INGOs in Ethiopia.
