Position Title: Community Mobilizer

Program / Department Summary
The project is intended to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with under nutrition and increased illnesses of conflict induced communities who do not have access to primary health care services and basic nutrition services.
General Position Summary
The community mobilizer facilitates community meetings, organizes events, and supports CMAM and Mobile health and nutrition team in implementing the project activities in Liben and Gumi Eldalo woredas of Guji zone, Oromiya Region and Hariso IDPs in Gablalao woredas of Somali Region. This position will have a strong competency on community participation, ownership creation, communication skills, and relationship building and networking, active case finding. Together with the other members of the team in proposed woredas will work to ensure that technical activities are implemented in accordance with established standards and recognized best practices to contribute to the achievement of the project's objectives.
Essential Job Responsibilities
Strategy & Vision
- Collaborate with other team member for effective integration between other services like Nutrition and health services
- Collaborate with Local authorities and other partners to harmonize different efforts for better impact and sustainability.
- Able to learn and update his/ her information or knowledge to adapt the changing situation and context
Program Management
- Timely mobilization and sensitization of the community for emergency nutrition and health services
- Provide ground information to Emergency Nutrition and health team and other program staff for situation in the project area
- Track and document active case finding and follow up of cases
- Supervision of community volunteers and how they are working in the community
- Overseeing implementation and monitoring while ensuring quality program delivery of the overall emergency nutrition and mobile health and nutrition activities
- Plan, implement and monitor community CMAM and mobile health outreach activities
- Select/recruit, train and supervise member of outreach volunteers at OTP sites
- Involve community leaders/ relevant health staffs in the recruitment process and promote of identification of outreach volunteers for each villages
- Report to woreda team leader and other relevant partners regarding outreach community activities
- Participate in CMAM and mobile health and nutrition program management duties as requested/ordered by team leader/coordinator (eg. distribution planning, hygiene campaign, monitoring and reporting) and perform other tasks as negotiated (eg. training of volunteers)
- Explore all links with individuals’ members of the community (eg. TBAs, village leader etc) and develop their engagement and ownership of the community based activities
- Make a regular follow up on communities hygiene message utilization, supplementary food and provide regular feedback to communities
- Record examples of best practices
- In liaison with woreda team leader, advise and implement strategy to for active case finding (screening) within identified catchment areas using nutrition staffs/community volunteers
- In liaison with woreda team leader, create system /tools for screening follow up and feedback statistics to team leader and adapt case finding strategy appropriately
- In liaison with woreda team leader, coordinate the activities of outreach volunteers and hygiene campaigns, ensure active participation of outreach volunteers in OTP
- In liaison with woreda team leader, ensure that fully operation system in place for follow up of children not returning to the program (including absentees, defaulters, deaths) and children at risk (long staying/not gaining weight) and post visits feedback is given to team leader
- Monitor and ensure the program’s engagement with disadvantaged or excluded group
- Support of delivery of nutrition, health and Wash education messages of appropriate content and manner to mothers and care takers
- Perform other tasks as identified and judged necessary by MC Emergency Response Program team.
- Other duties as assigned
- Conduct himself/herself both professionally and personally in such a manner as to bring credit to Mercy Corps and to not jeopardize its humanitarian mission in Ethiopia.
Team Management
- Interacts with community volunteers, kebele administration and community representatives to mobilize the community
- Supervise community volunteers and provide ongoing technical support in defaulter tracing, community mobilization and active case finding

- Creates and maintain relationship with kebele administration, religious leaders and community representatives to create transparency and get feedback from the community to ensure accountability to the community
- Upholds the image and values of Mercy Corps at all times,
- Educate the community to improve their health and nutrition services seeking behavior and motivate them to come to health facilities
Security
- Ensure compliance with security procedures and policies as determined by country leadership.
- Proactively ensure that team members operate in a secure environment and are aware of policies.
Organizational Learning
- As part of our commitment to organizational learning and in support of our understanding that learning organizations are more effective, efficient and relevant to the communities they serve, we expect all team members to commit 5% of their time to learning activities that benefit Mercy Corps as well as themselves.
Job Requirements
Knowledge and Experience
- Diploma in Health, Nutrition, Community Development and Social Science Discipline
- At least 2 years of experience working in community based nutrition and healthcare activities preferable working with NGOs
- Local languages of the project area is COMPULSORY
- Ability to interact effectively with the diverse ethnic groups throughout the sites
- Previous work experience with a non-governmental organization
- Ability to take initiative and work independently
- Organized, reliable and good communication skills
- Ability to read, write and speak English and Local Language fluently
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to work well with a team

- Ability to work successfully in remote and challenging settings with limited resources
