Background

Vétérinaires Sans Frontières Suisse (VSF-Suisse) is a politically and religiously neutral humanitarian organization head quartered in Berne Switzerland. The organization works to improve lives and livelihoods in areas where livestock plays a lifeline. It also links nutrition with agriculture and promotes One Health initiatives through a number of its humanitarian and development projects. VSF Suisse is operational in seven countries of West and East Africa. It is currently implementing projects and programs in the Somali and Oromia Regional States of Ethiopia.

In partnership with its partner organization (HEKS/EPER and Dorcas Aid Ethiopia), VSF Suisse will implement an innovative project entitled, “Viable Innovations for Resilience and Livelihood, (VIRL)” in Borana Zone of Oromia Regional State. The project focuses on animal feed and milk value chains and seeks to implement a market systems development (MSD) approach. It is designed to build resilience and livelihood security of vulnerable communities in the target areas through facilitating systemic change in feed and fodder production and dairy market systems. VIRL is a two years (November 2020 to October 2022) project supported by RESET Plus Innovation Fund of the European Union.

 VSF-Suisse seeks to hire two Community Facilitators for its projects under the Borana Field Office, Yabello. The Community Facilitators will undertake project facilitation and implementation under the direct supervision of VSF Suisse Project Officer and the guidance Field Office Coordinator. 

Job Responsibilities and Key Tasks

  • Will conduct community mobilization and awareness raising campaigns at kebele or village level during implementation of the project’s activities.
  • Facilitate and closely follow up the selection of emergency committees and beneficiary households as per the selection criteria set.
  • Ensure the timely documentation of the individual beneficiary households’ profile
  • Interact on a regular basis with targeted beneficiaries with the aim of introducing and explaining each projects’ objectives, mobilize community participation and ensure it conforms to work schedules, and provide mentorship for community activities in regard to interventions being implemented .
  •  Carry out community/project beneficiaries training with a view to creating/raising awareness and building their capacity to run implemented projects.
  •  Works closely with local government line departments, kebele administration and the project team, and give feedback to the targeted beneficiaries.
  • Ensure that the communities are continuously involved and kept up-to-date with project developments.
  • Gather and collate monitoring data and report on findings from field monitoring activities.
  • Execute any other task assigned by the field officers and area coordinators of VSF Suisse;

Job Requirements

Education, Qualifications & other knowledge

  • Diploma in rural community development, animal science, social work/community development, and livelihood (BSc/BA will be a plus)
  • Experience and understanding of NGOs’ working environment and culture
  • Experience in the use of participatory methodologies such PRA, FGD, KII etc.
  • Experience in community training, advocacy for change and ability to inspire community economic empowerment.
  • Computer literate
  • Team player and cultural sensitivity
  • Fluency both in English as well as Afan Oromo is a must, knowledge of other local languages is a plus
