Job Summary

The Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) strives to address nutrition and health-related problems by conducting intervention based research and contributing to the effective implementation of the Food and Nutrition Policy in Ethiopia. To this end, the Food Science and Nutrition Research Directorate is planning to implement a national nutrition survey. This survey will serve as a baseline for the implementation of the Food and Nutrition Strategy. The dietary survey assistant will support the planning and implementation of the dietary assessment component of this survey.

Specific responsibilities

  • Assist in the finalization of protocols, data collection tools, and data management systems.
  • Assist investigators with pre-survey work of the dietary survey; including the development of a food list, a food consumption database, a standard recipe database, and portion size estimation methods. 
  • Support investigators with the recruitment of dietary survey staff.
  • Train and supervise regional coordinators, supervisors, and data collectors.  
  • Oversee dietary survey day-to-day operation including supervision of data collection, data management, and preliminary analysis. 
  • Develop and maintain a timeline for all dietary survey activities ensuring investigators are reminded of up-coming activities and project deliverables.
  • Organize and conduct bi-weekly progress review meetings with investigators.\Supervise timely and accurate data collection, data cleaning, and preliminary data analysis.

Timeline

  • The dietary survey assistant will be recruited as soon as possible for a period of six months with possibility of extension depending on the availability of funds.

Management and reporting

  • The dietary survey assistant will work under the direct supervision of the deputy food science and nutrition directorate director with oversight from food science and nutrition research directorate director
  • The dietary survey assistant will work closely with other food and nutrition baseline survey team members, EPHI staff and partners, and nutrition sector actors in a participatory process.

Language Skills:

  • Fluency in written and spoken English and Amharic is mandatory.

Duty station

Addis Ababa with possible travel to regions.

Job Requirements

  • A Masters or Doctoral (PhD) degree in Applied Human Nutrition, Public Health Nutrition, Nutritional Sciences. 
  • A Minimum of five years of experience in planning and implementation of nutrition surveys.
  • Experience in dietary assessment using quantitative 24-hr recalls is preferred.

Demonstrated skills and competencies

  • Strong analytical ,writing, synthesis skills, documented through publications in peer reviewed journals.
  • Ability to use at least one data analysis software package, STATA (Preferred), R,SAS
  • Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills are required.
  • Experience/Knowledge about the Ethiopian health sector development program and the health system strengthening activities.

Accountability

  • Both the Civil service and EPHI Human Resource Development rules and regulations will be applied to guide the day to day services.
  • As new priorities emerge, EPHI may periodically revise the TOR for this position.
