Job Description

The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) was founded in 1970 through the initiative of the Norwegian and Swedish Save the Children organizations seconded by the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia. The Institute got its name from the Norwegian physician, Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen, who first described the leprosy bacillus (Mycobacterium leprae). AHRI is a biomedical research institute that works in developing tools for prevention, control and treatment of mycobacterium and other diseases of public healthy importance through applied and basic biomedical research and training.

AHRI has recently established a sequencing and bioinformatics facility. Currently, there is only Illumina Next Seq 500 sequencer but expected to include other sequencing platforms. The Biotechnology and Bioinformatics Directorate is therefore looking for a potential applicant to work in the wet lab at the sequencing facility.

Job Requirements

  • A PhD degree in the field of Molecular Biology/Microbiology with 8 years research experience in advanced laboratory with practical experience in omics such as genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics; And 9 publication points
  • Experience in performing DNA and RNA extraction, purification, amplification, detection using PCR and qPCR, and sequencing
  • Experience in using different sequencing platforms

Roles and responsibilities

  • Write research proposals and grants
  •  Write SOPs and develop procedures
  • Plan and conduct experimental activities
  • Collect, organize, and evaluate data, write technical reports and manuscripts
  • Contributes to the design, optimization, verification, troubleshooting and validation of current and new methods and provide input into the design, direction, implementation and interpretation of experimental studies
  • Work closely with the Bioinformatics and the Biotechnology teams
  •  Assist other research directorates in designing and selecting appropriate sequencing methods pertinent to specific research questions.  
  • Plan and provide training to others
  • Managing Team members
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in this area.
