Job Summary

Self Help Africa (SHA), in partnership with A Glimmer of Hope, is implementing two projects in Oda Bultum Wereda, West Hararghe Zone of Oromia region

  1. Integrated Community Development Project (ICDP) in 14 Kebeles
  2. Emergency Response to Desert Locust Invasion Affected People in 9 Kebeles.

Job Title: Project Manager

Contract type: 2-years fixed-term contract renewable based on performance review

About Self Help Africa:

Self Help Africa (SHA) is an international NGO, dedicated to the vision of an economically thriving and resilient rural Africa. SHA focuses on agriculture and agribusiness as the engine of growth in Africa. Our approach is collaborative and market-based: although we see our primary clients as smallholder farmers in Africa, we work with all participants in the agricultural value chain.

Job Purpose:

The Project Manager has the overall responsibility of managing and ensuring the smooth running of all project activities to which he/she is assigned in accordance with SHA principles and guidelines. He/She is also responsible for the planning, organising, directing, monitoring, and reporting on all project achievements. She/He is responsible for managing project staff, finances, office facilities, and all project related communications. The Project Manager shall also liaise with local government bodies and represent SHA on all ICDP aspects at woreda and zone level.

Key Responsibilities:

Specific duties include but are not limited to:

  • Provide technical and professional support to ensure quality and appropriateness of project intervention as well as ensure its sustainability
  • Prepare project implementation plans and budgets, and carry out proper implementation of the project
  • Manage project budget in accordance with SHA financial manuals
  • Prepare periodical and annual project narrative and financial reporting.
  • Undertake regular monitoring and periodical evaluation of project activities and compile findings
  • Write case studies and document the entire lesson learned using all possible communication medias
  • Organize, conduct and facilitate different trainings on improved agricultural practices, value chains, management of cooperatives and others so as to develop the capacity of the community and other stakeholders
  • Prepare training materials, posters, and other training aids as deemed necessary
  • Manage personnel, financial and material resources of the project and regularly monitor the financial status of the project
  • Represent SHA and establish open working relationships with official government counterparts and beneficiary communities
  • Ensure the program is implemented as per the agreement with the donor and the government, and that project activities are carried out timely and to the highest standards
  • Ensure all project initiatives are implemented to achieve maximum impact as per the project objectives and within the schedule and budget
  • Ensure project operation complies with the rules and regulations of the government of Ethiopia 
  • Ensure office operations are running effectively and are compliant with all internal and external regulations
  • Contribute to gender and nutrition mainstreaming
  • Be responsive and appropriate to the local context
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the HoP.

Qualifications/Other Requirements:

Essential:

  • Bachelors, or preferably Masters, in Agriculture, Agricultural extension, Agricultural Economics, Agri-business or related fields
  • Conversant to the concepts and practices of smallholder agriculture and value chain developments
  • Committed to gender and economic development
  • At least ten years of proven experience in implementing agricultural development projects of which five years are at similar or better position
  • Proven experience in capacity strengthening of smallholder farmers, farmer groups, cooperatives/ unions.
  • Knowledge of key methodologies of nutrition and gender mainstreaming
  • Understanding of institutional capacity-building and organizational change
  • Demonstrated analytical skills and ability to think strategically
  • Result-oriented and demonstrated ability to take initiative, solve problems, facilitate and coordinate teamwork in view of achieving expected plans and outcomes
  • Experience and demonstrated skills in interacting with partners and allies, government and stakeholders
  • A strong commitment to the aims, objectives and values of the SHA Ethiopia Country Programme, and the achievement of project objectives
  • Very good communication skills in spoken and written English; AND very good command of the Oromefa language and the local culture
  • Very good working knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and general IT skills
  • Experience in Monitoring and Evaluation and knowledge of M&E principles.

Desirable:

  • Good understanding of the Ethiopian Government structure and system as well as agricultural extension services
  • Experience in team management and coordination
  • Practical experience in gender mainstreaming (such as gender analysis & gender auditing)
  • Ability to communicate effectively in more than one national language
  • Direct experience in project management.

Contract

  • 2-year contract, renewable
