Who we are

SOS Children’s Villages Ethiopia is an International Non-governmental organization and a member of SOS Children’s Villages International Federation. The organization started its humanitarian work with the opening of its first Village in Mekelle, Northern part of Ethiopia in 1974. The organization has been providing life-saving provisions such as food, water and health services for a very significant number of children devastated by severe drought and the subsequent famine.

Today, we have grown significantly to meet the persistent challenges that confront Ethiopian children who have lost parental care and are at risk of losing their parental care. Working in close collaboration with international donors, local government and community based organizations across seven program locations; SOS Children’s Villages Ethiopia aspires that every child grows up with love, respect and security.

Why we need you?

The DRA Project/Ethiopia Tigray Joint response focuses on responding and rehabilitating essential services like water and sanitation, health and nutrition to the IDP population in Tigray region (Mekelle Zone) , especially those with intersecting vulnerabilities such as children, pregnant and lactating women (PLW) and those living with a disability, who are the most vulnerable as they experience additional barriers to access essential service.

The position holder will be responsible for Production of BoQs, of WASH infrastructures Designs, supervision of all construction and rehabilitation activities including water supply systems, sanitation facilities and other related infrastructures. The WASH Engineer will ensures that water, sanitation, and hygiene project, programs, and awareness are implemented effectively, professionally, and in accordance with the culture and practices of the local community and IDPs.

Your role....

As a WASH Engineer for DRA Project, you will be in charge of the following:

  • Identifying water supply construction sites, mapping, designing and ensure the development of accurate Bill of Quantities ( BoQs) & detailed technical drawings for all the WASH interventions in liaison with relevant technical staff
  • Supervise and be responsible for all the technical aspect for project implementation, make sure that contractors complete project work timely, in efficient and accurate manner with respect to standard engineering
  • Facilitate and maintain a good professional relationship between government, communities and contractors
  • Ensure community involvement at all phases of the project and the development of community ownership of the project.
  • Provide feedback to the monitoring and evaluation system in order to assess the effectiveness and the impact of the projects and propose recommendations for improvement
  • Contribute to the development of constructive solutions to challenges identified by the community and contractors
  •  Provide regular written and verbal reports to the Regional Construction Advisor and Project Coordinator on the infrastructures development activities.
  • Providing water, sanitation and hygiene related sectoral leadership and expertise in relevant needs assessments and analysis
  • Ensuring the proper dissemination of hygiene and sanitation messages to the community at grass root level
  • Organizing community level hygiene awareness campaigns and prevention of AWD out breaks and COVID-19 pandemic
  • Selecting and designing the most appropriate form of sanitation system
  • Representing the organization’s emergency WASH Promotion program ensuring a positive collaboration and working relationship with pertinent government offices and a public image of the organization.
  • Planning and implementing emergency WASH Promotion activities, and closely monitoring, evaluating
  • Establishing community level WASH committees and improving their capacity to manage and control water points
  • Assist in the preparation of simple, sustainable operation and maintenance plans and procedures for implementation and exit strategy at community level.
  • Conducting water quality assessments and disinfecting sources as required.
  • Coordinating detailed hydrological and environmental assessments in order to map areas requiring new water sources.
  • Develop and maintain weekly, monthly plans and written comprehensive records of engineering work undertaken in the project including site visits and reporting of work progress

The must haves

Education:  

  • BSc Degree in Water Engineering, Civil engineering Water/ /Sanitary engineer similar field of study. 

Experience

  • A Minimum of 3 years of experience in working for Emergency WASH Promotion Project
  • Professional experience in community WASH programs in displaced populations
  • Excellent program implementation skills 

The Pluses:

  • Able to respond or assist in emergency situations and have very good interpersonal, mediation, and negotiation skills.
  • He/she must have well developed organizational, verbal and written communications skills, and analytical skills and good computer skills.
  • Flexible, adaptable and able to work effectively in a variety of settings and in a cross-cultural situation and be knowledgeable of the services available in the community.
