Job Summery

Position: WASH Assistant (Hygiene Promotion)

Reports to: WASH Coordinator

Supervision of: Community Hygiene Promoter

Duty station: Jijiga

Travel: 80%

Duration and type of contract: 6 Months with possible extension 

Preferred Candidate: Candidates Resident at Jijiga Area

Role and responsibilities

The purpose of the assistant position is to ensure a proper implementation of Hygiene and sanitation activities at the field level. He/she shall share whether the hygiene and sanitation needs are effectively being met in the interventions areas of all the zones of Somali Region.

Generic responsibilities:

  • Adhere to NRC policies, tools, handbooks and guidelines
  • Assist with the WASH Officer (Hygiene promotion) in the implementation of the sanitation and hygiene related activities.
  • Prepare and develop status reports as required by the WASH Officer and WASH CCC
  • Ensure proper filing of documents
  • Promote and share ideas for improvement of the support function

Specific Responsibilities

  • Promote safe WASH practices, including appropriate use and maintenance of WASH facilities and services.
  • Assist the WASH Officer (Hygiene promotion) in the implementation of environmental sanitation and hygiene promotion activities in the operation area. 
  • Conduct sanitation and hygiene needs assessments.
  • Facilitate community hygiene outreach for internally displaced people (IDPs) and host communities.
  • Ensure that planned hygiene promotion activities are being undertaken correctly in designated project locations, usually in coordination with other WASH activities.
  • Arrange and deliver hygiene promotion sessions to raise hygiene standards and practices among targeted communities.
  • Implement hygiene promotion initiatives appropriate to the context ensuring the technical and social aspects of water and sanitation programming are integrated.
  • Assess and analyze emerging public health needs and recommends sustainable practical solutions
  • Educate people about key aspects of hygiene in a culturally appropriate manner
  • Ensure all work is carried out as per the community needs and project standards.
  • Identify natural leaders within the target communities, train, and mentor them to be ‘Community WASH Focal Points’ for Community Hygiene and sanitation Promoters.
  • Mobilize, motivate and encourage potential leaders to talk to their fellow community members about good hygiene practices.
  • Document and report on conducted activities to ensure that needs assessed are being effectively responded to and that interventions are being documented.
  • Conduct household water safety and hygiene promotion assessment and build the capacity of local communities for sustainable water safety and hygiene promotion services.
  • Participate during WaSH NFI’s registration and Distribution to the target beneficiaries and ensure that the most vulnerable populations have been selected based on the selection criteria.
  • Perform any additional activities assigned by the supervisor.

Job Requirements

Professional competencies

Generic professional competencies for this position:

  • BSc or Advance Diploma in Public health or nursing/environmental health or related experience
  • Two years’ experience preferably INGO: Relevant training and experience in Water, Sanitation and hygiene.in a humanitarian/recovery context is also required
  • Experience in community social work
  • Good report writing and communication skills
  • Previous experience from working in complex and volatile contexts
  • Documented results related to the position’s responsibilities
  • Knowledge about own skills/profile

Context related skills; knowledge and experience:

  • Knowledge of the context in which the organization operates
  • Knowledge of the local language (Somali) – is a must.
  • Experience with implementation of project start-up and exit strategy
