Job Description

Project Background

As a dual mandated organization, Save the Children (SC) is currently implementing programs/projects both in development and humanitarian contexts in all parts of the country. Migration Livelihood and Child Protection are among the key thematic areas where SCI is actively engaged to improve the wellbeing of children, family and community in Ethiopia.

The Ethiopia Migration Programme (EMP) is a program, funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID), aiming “To protect would-be migrants and refugees from unsafe irregular migration through and from Ethiopia”. Its operational areas are Addis Ababa, North Wollo, Jijiga, Metema and Shire. Save the Children implements this program with the leading organization, Danish Refugee Council (DRC) together with BBC Media Action (BBCMA), Mixed Migration Centre (MMC) and Altai Consulting (AC).

ROLE PURPOSE:

The job holder will be primary responsible to support the project staff in planning, coordination, implementation and supervision of community based activities and also to ensure active involvement of and communication with the community and partners for smooth and successful implementation of project activities as per the approved project document; and government and donor requirements and Save the Children standards.

SCOPE OF ROLE:

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

  • Represent the project and overall management of its activities under respective districts with the support from Project Manager and Child Protection Officer.
  • Facilitate and coordinate the activities of Community Based Child Protection activities, including building the capacity of community based service providers to migrants and refugees, activities in respective operational woredas.
  • Facilitate the support to the child protection officers in community based child protection initiatives, need identification, planning and effective implementation of project activities.
  • Facilitate the active participation of communities and other stakeholders and work closely with community based protection structures, relevant child-youth led child protection groups, etc.
  • Take the lead in the mobilization of all stakeholders and follow up routine tasks of the project implementation at site level as required by the child protection officers.
  • Support, follow up and supervise the implementation of the community action plans on community based protection activities.
  • Organize workshops and trainings under the direction of the child protection officer.
  • Ensure regular communication between SC and the community. 
  • Develop periodic action plans and reports in close consultation with the child protection officers
  • Serve as translator of local languages to other project staff, consultants and visitors.
  • Accurately express SC position, objectives and policies.
  • Carry out other duties as requested by the child protection officers

Job Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Educational Qualifications:

  • Minimum Diploma/TVET in Sociology, social work, rural development, disaster risk management, food security, and other related fields

Experience and Skills

  • Minimum of 2 years of work experience on community mobilization   
  • Excellent understanding of the culture and ways of living of target communities.
  • Good written and spoken English
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills skill with communities, government structure etc.
  • Good Report writing skill; able to collect, document and share project records and information.
  • Experiences of working in NGOs; and communities at grass root level are advantageous.
  • Basic knowledge of Computer Application is desirable.
  • Ability and willingness to travel and work in rural areas where the project is implemented, within approved security frameworks.

Desirable

  • Experience of working with Women, Income Generating Groups, Natural Resource Management, in Agricultural/Livestock extension or related; and/or community based organization
  • Work experience in pastoral areas and knowledge of Afar language is advantageous
  • Work experience in diverse international NGOs is an asset
