Mercy Corps has been operating in Ethiopia since 2004, working in rural, peri-urban and urban areas in Six regional states: Somali, Oromia, Afar, Southern Nations Nationalities and Peoples(SNNP), Amhara, Gambela and the capital city of Addis Ababa. We engage in both development and humanitarian work, and seek to integrate approaches, programs and geographies as much as possible. Our partners include government, academic institutions, development and private sector actors, civil societies and participating public. Mercy Corps has a growing portfolio of programs in Ethiopia that focus on food security; agriculture and livestock market systems development; maternal and child health and nutrition; youth economic productivity; resilience and humanitarian response. In Ethiopia, some of our donors include USAID, SIDA, EU, DFID, and WFP.

 Position Title: Communications and Social Media Intern

 Location: Addis Ababa

 Dates of Internship: March – August 2021 (flexible)

 Length of Internship: Six months (flexible)

For the duration of this internship assignment the intern will receive:

  • Transport Allowance/ 3000.00 ETB/month
  • Per diem during field visit
  • Coverage of lodging expense during field visit

 Project Description:

 Mercy Corps is an international, non-governmental humanitarian relief and development agency with headquarters in the UK and USA operating in over 40 countries. The agency exists to alleviate suffering, poverty and oppression by helping people build secure, productive and just communities. Mercy Corps has been operating in Ethiopia since 2004 and is currently working in six regional states – Afar, Amhara, Gambella, Oromia, Somali, Southern Nations Nationalities and Peoples - and the capital city of Addis Ababa. We engage in both development and humanitarian programming, and seek to integrate approaches, programs and geographies as much as possible. Mercy Corps has a growing portfolio of programs in Ethiopia that focus on food security, agriculture and livestock market systems development, maternal and child health and nutrition, youth economic productivity, and humanitarian response. In Ethiopia, we envision a single country program, with a single mission, vision and strategy, actualized by different programs funded by different donors. All of our programs therefore should be planned and implemented in a way that reflects this vision.

The Communications and Social Media Internship will work to make this vision a reality. She/he will work closely with all departments to support the development and implementation of MC Ethiopia’s communications plan, for both internal and external consumption. In close cooperation with the program’s senior management, heads of departments, and program managers, she/he will identify communication needs, oversee and coordinate their production. Based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the intern will assist in supporting the country program’s efforts to grow a robust, innovative and impactful program portfolio.

Key Tasks:

  • Develop communication strategy for the MC Ethiopia country team
  • Maintain online presence of the Country program, including internal/external platforms
  • Conduct content gathering for Ethiopia Country program
  • Develop success stories, case studies, impact briefs, and presentations on programs
  • Ensure effective presence in external coordination structures

 Learning Objectives: 

At the completion of this internship, the intern will:

  • Learn the communications strategies and planning
  • Learn to create case studies and impact briefs
  • Understand the role of all departments in humanitarian and development programs and understand the operational systems in implementing such programs.
  • Be able to write quality reports, communication pieces, and learning products.
  • Gain a general understanding of local social, political, environmental, and economic issues, a basic grasp of their underlying causes in the local context of Ethiopia, and Mercy Corps’ approach to addressing these issues.

 Deliverables:

  • Create social media presence and system for collecting stories from the field
  • Develop a content bank that everyone can access
  • Develop five success stories and 10 Workplace updates
  • Develop five (reasonable quality) short videos produced on programs
  • One – two case studies / impact briefs produced

Job Requirements

Ideal Candidate Should Possess the Following Qualifications:

  • English fluency, spoken and written
  • Graduate study, complete or in progress, in international development, or other relevant course study.
  • Experience conducting research and analysis from primary and secondary data sources.
  • Knowledge of Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) best practices.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to get things done
  • Strong strategic thinking skills. Able to navigate complex environments and develop a clear, focused, and ambitious vision.
  • Prior demonstrated interest in creating positive social impact
  • Demonstrated interest in humanitarian and emergency response programming and strong motivation.
  • Experience in drafting or supporting report, communication and learning pieces.
  • Strong writing and analytical skills
  • Ability to respect Mercy Corps procedures, to meet deadlines, to work independently and cooperatively with team members is required.
  • Patient, calm, and willing to come to work each day with a sense of humor.
