Who we are

SOS Children’s Villages Ethiopia is an International Non-governmental organization and a member of SOS Children’s Villages International Federation. We started our humanitarian work in Ethiopia with the opening of our first Village in Mekelle, Northern part of Ethiopia in 1974. Since then, we have expanded our programs to different regions where there are significant needs for intervention and where we believe we can work in partnership with all relevant actors to bring sustainable positive outcomes for children’s and young people.

Today, we have grown significantly to meet the persistent challenges that confront Ethiopian children who have lost parental care and those that are at risk of losing their parental care. Working in close collaboration with international donors, local government and community based organizations across seven program locations; we aspire that every child grows up with love, respect and security.

Why we need you?

We are looking for a Youth Care and Development Officer who will be responsible for planning, coordinating, directing, monitoring and delivering support for the educational, psycho-social, employability and behavioral development of young people.

As a Youth Care and Development Officer you will be in charge of the following:

Coordinating & supporting young people in Education 

  • Supporting in the placement of drop out youth who returned from abroad and dismissal from local universities and colleges
  • Compiling and analyzing bi annual and annual academic progress reports of all school going young people in Alternative Care and the enrollment data of FCD targets young persons.
  • Receiving and compiling periodic academic grade reports of young people attending universities and colleges
  • Providing feedback on the reports to young persons from their respective Programme Locations.

Coordinating & supporting young people in employability  

  • Analyzing the local job markets and identifying potential employer branches for young people 
  • Supporting young people in searching apprenticeship, internship, volunteer service, and employment opportunities by contacting prospective employers and organizations
  • Working in partnership with professionals from other organizations that support young people such as social care, health, police, education and local authorities.
  • Searching information on career opportunities from public materials, newsletters and vacancy websites for young people.
  • Liaising and visiting employers, careers fairs and professional bodies to obtain information about job opportunities and labor market tendencies for unemployed young people.
  • Advising the young people on the development of the additional basic job skills and competences required by employers.
  • Supporting young people on preparing CVs, writing applications, job hunting and interview techniques;

Coordinating & supporting young people in their social lives 

  • Supporting young people in dealing with their different civil cases
  • Supporting young people in different social endeavors
  • Establishing relationships with young people to encourage and motivate participation 
  • Encouraging young people to look for possible job opportunities, youth networks and join them.
  • Encouraging young people to volunteer and become involved in their communities.
  • Providing better information, advice and guidance to help young people make choices that are more informed.

Capacity building for learning and life on young people 

  • Collaborating with the relevant stakeholders to conduct need assessment of young people in the university and colleges to identify their development areas in learning and life skills.
  • Collaborating with the relevant stakeholders to organize and facilitate trainings, review meetings and other interventions to develop the learning and life skills of young people.
  • Collaborating with the relevant stakeholders to conduct assessment them to organize needs based capacity-building interventions for young people in the colleges and universities. 
  • Supporting in facilitating additional basic skills trainings for graduate young people
  • Collaborating with the relevant stakeholders to organize and arrange life skills/pre-orientation program on the job opportunity, educational policy changes, social environment, and college life.

Organizing and compiling data and information

  • Collecting and compiling basic data on young people from different sources.
  • Checking if the information is uploaded on the Program database and the Program database is regularly updated
  • Recording, updating, analyzing, interpreting and maintaining data of all SOS youth.
  • Keeping up-to-date records of caregivers. 
  • Using the Program database preparing reports and statistics for internal and external use.

Coordinating, facilitating exams, visas, passport and travels

  • Providing information to the programme team about the expenses (such as international exams, visas, passport and travels) to be included in their budgets particularly expenses related to overseas students.
  • Facilitating and ensuring that college/university students’ payments, school fee, living allowances house rent, pocket money, stationary materials) of young people under his follow up is effected on time.
  • Facilitating and ensuring that the visa and passport requests for the prospective candidates are processed in time.
  • Facilitating and supporting students attending their education abroad in their visa process, travels- bookings, arrival and departures.

Network and maintaining relationships with relevant stakeholders

  • Networking with programme-based youth workers, programme staff, and staff living and working with young people 
  • Establishing good relationship with all colleges and universities and other agencies in Ethiopia.
  • Providing all the necessary data and information on young people to concerned co-workers and program locations.
  • Establishing good relationship with SOS Alumni youth association.
  • Linking with governments and other stakeholders and advocating for the rights of young people in and leaving care

Performing other similar duties as assigned by the National Youth and Gender Advisor

The must haves:

Education Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in Education/ youth care and Development, Community/social work and other relevant disciplines 

Experiences:

  • At least 3-5 years’ previous experience in youth quality care and development
  • Work experience in education, social work or community development 
  • Work experience with adolescents
  • Work experience in the national/local environment 

Other Competencies

  • Profound comprehension and knowledge of youth care and development 
  • Knowledge about trauma (trauma-informed care) and mental health 
  • Familiarity with and awareness of UNCRC (UN Child Rights Convention), child and youth care acts & other relevant national (and local) legislation in connection with safeguarding 
  • Profound skills in planning, implementation and monitoring young persons development 
  • Good level of digital skills and knowledge in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams 
  • Fluency in Written and spoken communication of the English language
