Forests4Future

The Forests for Future (F4F) Project is part of a global program in which one of the country package is in Ethiopia. The project is supporting the implementation of Forest Landscape Restoration in part of the lake Chamo catchment Gamo Zone, in Southern Nations Nationalities People’s Region (SNNPR).

Within the GIZ Ethiopia portfolio, the F4F project is attached to the bilateral Biodiversity and Forestry Program and is under the climate change cluster.

Duration of Contract:      December 31, 2023

Responsibilities:

  • Identifying potential Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) related income generation activities and standardize their implementation under the project
  • Support the implementation of the income generation activities with entrepreneurial mindset
  • Support the undertakings of site-specific research to improve
  • Bridging the link between monitoring, knowledge management and communication to the wider public  
  • Coordinating and organize events in the project

Tasks:

Identifying potential FLR related income generation activities and standardize their implementation under the project

  • Working together with the government relevant offices for livelihood improvement and income generation to support target communities in the project site with project relevant livelihood activities
  • In partnership with the relevant government office, identify and evaluate the opportunities and feasibilities of FLR based income generating activities in the project area (such as Nursery as a business, private woodlot, beekeeping, fruit development and many others)
  • Undertake socio-economic profiling of targeted communities for the livelihood activity under the project support
  • Analyze, evaluate and compile costs and benefits of the different restoration actions in different land uses proposed by the project.
  • Familiar on Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Restoration Opportunities Optimization Tools
  • A good understanding on Agricultural and Forestry activities on the rural contexts.
  • Assess the financial flow of our beneficiaries as baseline assessment
  • Regular field visits for following up project activity implementation
  • Assess the potentials for new value chain and optimize existing approaches including forest- related value chains
  • Assess the potential of monetary revenues for ecosystem services
  • Assess and optimize the financial safeguards on community level
  • Prepare strategic business plans and profitability/feasibility analysis for the IGAs and FLR investments (nursery, plantation etc) together with relevant offices.

Support the implementation of the income generation activities with entrepreneurial mindset

  • Prepare guidelines, implementation modalities and standards for the identified income generation activities to facilitate their implementations with a sustainable business approach 
  • Follow-up and technically support income generation target groups in their action on business management and further development and diversification
  • Provide technical supports in processing, packaging, value addition and marketing of produces from the IGA interventions
  • Support the target groups in creating market linkage and product diversification
  • Coordinate with other projects and programs dealing with FLR based income generation support in the landscape and beyond and create implementation synergy and common implementation modalities
  • To introduce innovative ideas and implementation approaches which could lead to sustainability of the businesses and the natural resource

Bridging the link between monitoring, knowledge management and communication to the wider public

  • To contribute to the production, documentation and dissemination of project IGA related information and lesson learned and socio-economic aspects of the project
  • To support, follow up and properly document the regular success stories and best practices
  • To work closely together with the project team in order to have a good knowledge management at any time

Coordinating all kinds of events and missions in the project

  • Facilitate the organization of events and trainings in the project in partnership with the project team taking the focal responsibility
  • Facilitate and coordinate missions in the project site
  • Assists with planning, coordinating and documenting meetings, workshops, seminars and other project activities 

Other Duties/Additional Tasks

  • To consult routinely with the Project team regarding all kinds of activities
  • To provide support in organizational and management questions
  • To get permanently familiar with GIZ-specific planning, implementation and reporting procedures and keeps track of any changes
  • To be familiar with other BMZ supported programmes in the catchment area and guide the project for efficient coordinated work
  • To carry out tasks relevant to the project on request

Job Requirements

Qualifications

  • MSc degree in natural resource economics, agricultural economics, rural development, and related
  • Thorough experience in application of participatory approaches
  • Good communication skill
  • Good master…

Professional experience

  • Minimum of 3 years professional experience in the sector of IGA in a rural setting
  • Minimum 3 years professional experience in an international NGO or cooperation body

Other knowledge, additional competencies

  • Thorough experience in application of participatory approaches
  • Good communication skill
  • Good mastering of the English language
