Therefore, Swiss Church Aid/ HEKS engage in development cooperation, humanitarian aid and church cooperation and works in more than 30 countries and runs around 200 projects world-wide. Swiss Church Aid/ HEKS is a member of the ACT Alliance.

In Ethiopia, Swiss Church Aid/ HEKS has country programs with focus on Natural Resource Management, WASH, Inclusive Markets for Smallholder Pastoralists & Farmers and Humanitarian Assistance for drought and conflict affected communities. The Ethiopia Country Office is recruiting Community Workers for its Project in Somali Region.

Job Description

Key areas of responsibilities are:

  • Facilitate and organize trainings, meeting forums, workshops and/or events, prepare setup, distribute reading and learning materials, register and fill in attendance sheet of trainees, participants and personnel’s.
  • Establishes and maintains close working relationship with communities (community volunteers, village-level task force leaders and local government agents traditional, religious and kebele leaders).
  • In collaboration with project staff and other stakeholders, ensure appropriate beneficiaries are targeted.
  • Organize and facilitate mobilization of community tree seedling planting, and other community based NRM activities.
  • Ensure the intended beneficiary will receive the required entitlement or services to improve household’s resiliency
  • Distribute inputs to project beneficiaries and maintain accurate records of the same in collaboration with the immediate supervisor.
  • Organize DRM communities and conduct early warning awareness campaigns
  • Conduct regular field visits to project sites to verify quality/progress of project interventions.
  • Support in identifying appropriate physical conservation measures in the identified communal and closure areas.
  • Establish and maintain a good rapport with project beneficiaries, as well as local government officials, community leaders and relevant local organizations
  • Integrate DRR and Agricultural activities with the discussion session.
  • Proactively participate in baseline and end line data collection

Job Requirements

Education, Qualifications & other knowledge

  • Diploma or Degree in Agriculture, Sociology, Development studies or related fields.
  • More than 3 years of work experience in related work for diploma holders and more than 1 year work experience for degree holders.
  • Communication skill, good human relations, willingness to reside in rural areas.
  • Firm belief in teamwork, gender equality, conceptual understanding of participatory approach and sustainable development.
  • Respect, accountability, courage, excellence, stress tolerance, information monitoring, developing teams, interpersonal skills, coaching, problem solving, planning and organizing
  • The Community worker is expected to establish open relationship with the community, government counterparts in order to facilitate and encourage active participation in overall development activities and internally, with Supervisors, Coordinator, and other concerned FO’s staff.
  • The Community worker lives among the community. She/he travels long distances (50%) and stands about 30% during training sessions
  • Having a motor bike driving license is advantageous.
  • High level of commitment and willingness to travel frequent/long distance in hardship areas
  • Demonstrated skills in partnership building and interpersonal communication
  • Knowledge of the working area and existing relationship with agriculture offices is preferred
  • Excellent and demonstrated skills in computer Microsoft office applications Word, emails
  • Knowledge of local language and working with pastoralist is mandatory Good level of reporting writing skills
