Swiss Church Aid/HEKS is the aid organization of the Protestant Churches of Switzerland and has its headquarters in Zurich/Switzerland. Swiss Church Aid/ HEKS works towards a more humane and more equitable world, assisting people and communities to overcome economic, social or humanitarian disparities in order to gain autonomy and to live with dignity both in Switzerland and abroad. Therefore, Swiss Church Aid/ HEKS engage in development cooperation, humanitarian aid and church cooperation and works in more than 30 countries and runs around 200 projects world-wide. Swiss Church Aid/ HEKS is a member of the ACT Alliance.

In Ethiopia, Swiss Church Aid/ HEKS has country programmes with focus on Natural Resource Management, WASH, Inclusive Markets for Smallholder Pastoralists & Farmers and Humanitarian Assistance for drought and conflict affected communities. The Ethiopia Country Office is recruiting a Project Coordinator for its Desert Locust Project.

Purpose of the Job

To coordinate a Desert Locust Response & Resilience Building Project implemented by HEKS in partnership with other consortium member organizations, ensuring donor guidelines are followed, activities are delivered, and results are achieved. The Project Coordinator is responsible to establish and maintain communication and dialogue with relevant stakeholders, including the Ethiopian Government, and to prepare quality reports for HEKS HQ and donors. The Project Coordinator will report to the Programme Manager and closely work with HEKS technical team, project staff and partners.

Job Description


  • Key areas of responsibilities are:To ensure project activities are periodically and adequately planned and reviewed with full participation of all project consortium member organizations.
  • To coordinate timely and result-oriented implementation of planned project activities.
  • To lead consortium participation in relevant networks and forums pertinent to the implemented project.
  • To facilitate joint monitoring and experience sharing activities among consortium member organizations.
  • To ensure relevant lessons, best practices and innovations are captured and shared with relevant partners and stakeholders.
  • To facilitate project evaluations by HEKS or other service providers.
  • To ensure monthly, quarterly, bi-annual and annual activity and financial reports are developed and submitted to donors, head office, government and other relevant stakeholders.
  • To ensure that all data and information generated in the process of project implementation are recorded and filed in a safe manner for them to be retrieved whenever necessary.
  • To contribute, as a member of HEKS, to the development of project ideas, concepts, and proposals in line with the organizational strategy
  • To undertake other assignments given by the Programme Manager.

Job Requirements

Education, Qualifications & other knowledge

  • MA/MSc in Economics, Rural Development, Social Science or related fields.
  • Seven years of relevant experience in project implementation.
  • Demonstrable employment with International NGOs.
  • Experience in coordinating development and humanitarian interventions.
  • Experience in coordinating, supporting and coaching teams.
  • Experience of generating information and effective report writing.

Desirable

  • Experience in working across cultures and themes.
  • Experience of sensitive planning for gender equality and empowerment of women and other marginalized groups (children, people with disabilities etc.)

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to establish credibility and maintain supportive relationships with project staff, beneficiary community, donors, government and other stakeholders.
  • Strong communication and listening skills.
  • Ability for information generation, situation analysis and timely dissemination.
  • Understanding of financial requirements of projects and ability to prepare and manage budgets.
  • Very good command of written and spoken English and Amharic.
  • Very good verbal and written reporting and presentation skills.
  • Very good level of IT skills and computer literacy.

Desirable

  • Networking ability to participate at policy level engagements with local government and other development partners.
  • Ability to speak any local language of Ethiopia, in addition to Amharic.
  • Project and proposal development skills.
