In Ethiopia, CRS has a long and rich history of providing emergency relief and development assistance to the people of Ethiopia since 1958. At present, CRS/Ethiopia implements multiple projects through different partner organizations. CRS/Ethiopia has a highly diverse portfolio ranging from very large food-supported emergency response to cutting edge development programs. The current CRS/Ethiopia budget stands at $100 million with funding from the U.S. Government, UN agencies, private foundations, individual donors, and CRS private funds.

Position Title:  Project Assistant - Safeguarding and Protection  

Department: Program

Duty Station: CRS Ethiopia/Mekelle and Adigrat

Required Number: Two (2)

Employment Term:  Definite Term for 7 Month

Reports To:  Project Officer-Safeguarding and Protection

Job Summary:

As a member of CRS Ethiopia Safeguarding and Protection unit, you will be based in Tigray. You will provide responsive, effective, and efficient safeguarding monitoring in support of the Catholic Relief Services’ (CRS) mission to serve the poor and vulnerable. You will support the Safeguarding and Protection activities in Tigray region. You will provide consistent and high-quality monitoring service and contribute to the proper stewardship of project resources to help operational effectiveness in support of overall high-quality programming.

Job Responsibilities: 

  • Assist and support the coordination and implementation of all assigned safeguarding monitoring activities to ensure the needs of program participants, especially vulnerable groups.
  • Conduct safeguarding and protection monitoring using formal and informal methods to identify the challenges of project participants.
  • Record and categorize complaints and feedbacks from program participants and ensure timely response in collaboration with the Safeguarding and Protection Project Officer-Tigray or Safeguarding and Protection Manager.
  • Conduct service mapping in CRS intervention areas to ensure referral of services so the needs of program participants can be met.
  • Assist project participants for any programmatic challenges by working closely with CRS staff in different programs in the region.
  • Assist the safeguarding and protection project officer in the development of safeguarding updates and reports.
  • Support to safeguarding and protection unit in different capacity strengthening and awareness raising activities to enhance staff and partners capacity on safeguarding and protection.
  • Participate in different safeguarding and protection assessments to better ensure safeguarding and protection concerns in different programs and projects.
  • Provide awareness creation for project participants on their entitlements, issues of sexual exploitation and abuse, prohibited staff conducts and reporting mechanisms.
  • Provide any support on safeguarding and protection as may be requested by the supervisor.

Job Requirements

Typical Background, Experience & Requirements:

  • BA Degree on Gender, Law, Protection, Human rights, or related Social Sciences
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience
  • Proven experience on gender, protection, safeguarding or law
  • Experience on GBV case management is highly desired
  • Fluency in English and the local language (Tigrigna)
  • Experience in MS Office package (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and information management systems
  • A previous experience in an international NGOs and/or institution is a strong advantage

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team-oriented environment with good interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work closely with local partners and community members
  • Strong customer service orientation with good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Good time management skills with ability to work on multiple tasks

 Required/Desired Foreign Language: Tigrigna and English

 Travel Required: 60 %

 Key Working Relationships:

Supervisory: Safeguarding and Protection Program Officer-Tigray

Internal: Safeguarding and protection team, CRS program team (emergency, WASH, etc),

External: CRS partner organizations, UN agencies, INGOs, regional level safeguarding and protection networks
