Location: International Institute for Primary Health Care - Ethiopia

Reports to: Senior Researcher Advisor of IIfPHC-E or focal person (PI) for AHDP

Contract term: Contract, 6 months

Number of positions: 1

The International Institute for Primary Health Care – Ethiopia (IPHC-E) is an organization affiliated with the Ethiopian Ministry of Health (MOH) and supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. We provide technical assistance in Primary Health Care to the Ministry of Health and other countries through capacity building training, knowledge generation, management and sharing, program design and implementation. We support the MOH through evidence-based policy recommendations, training of PHC leaders for both young and established, implementation of innovation laboratories, and engagement on PHC related policy and strategy designs. We engage in global advocacy to bring PHC as a primary driver to achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in Ethiopia and beyond.

In addition to building the capacity of Primary Health Care systems across the globe, the Institute focuses heavily on projects which aim to ensure that evidences in the field of PHC are generated and shared through presentations and publications for improving design and implementation of community health programs in Ethiopia and other countries with similar settings.

Thus, IPHC-E is looking to recruit a Research Assistant who would assist the collaborative research (AHDP - African Health Diagnostic Platform) with JHU and other implementation research undertakings of the Institute on contractual basis.

Scope of work

The International Institute for Primary Health Care – Ethiopia in collaboration with the Johns Hopkins University is engaged in the AHDP project to achieve the following goal: improving access and quality of laboratory and diagnostic services through establishing partnerships between government and private sector (PPP) laboratory and diagnostic companies, and increasing cost effectiveness and quality in the public health sector.

Duties and responsibilities of the RA:

  • Assist the focal person (PI – IPHC-E) and other team members in all activities of the project AHDP
  • Search and compile documents that are relevant to AHDP
  • Organize and conduct stakeholder meetings
  • Document meeting minutes and proceedings and provide feedback
  • Communicate with relevant stakeholders as directed by the PI (Senior Research Advisor)
  • Collect data through informal and formal communication with stakeholders
  • Contribute ideas on how best to evaluate and implement the project in Ethiopia (Addis Ababa) as directed by the AHDP team - Ethiopia
  • Assist in report writing
  • Participate in other activities of the research team as assigned by the PI

Deliverables:

  • Minutes, proceedings, documents, files and reports
  • Stakeholder analysis reports
  • Updated contact list of stakeholders
  • Manuscripts 

Compensation and Modalities of Payment

  • The RA will be paid 1500 USD (Ethiopian birr equivalent) each month for 6 months
  • The contractual agreement can be renewed upon satisfactory performance by the Research Assistant and recommendation of the PI. 

Job Requirements

Required qualifications, experiences and skills:

  • MD with Master’s degree in Public health or social science or Master’s degree in public health with relevant experience in the health care setting
  • Outstanding experience in research methods and techniques (design, data collection, analysis and report writing)
  • Good communication skills
  • Has skills in writing reports and experience in manuscript writing  
  • Is proficient in Microsoft office (Word, Excel, Power point)
  • Has strong quantitative and qualitative data analysis skills
  • A minimum of 5-year experience in public health research after graduate degree
  • Able to understand and communicate technicalities to PPP and professionals working in laboratories, imaging, and pathology
  • Highly organized and detail oriented
  • Able to work with multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary teams
  • Published 2 or more papers in peer reviewed journals
