 Project Information

Ethiopia Public Health Institute (EPHI) is an exciting and dynamic autonomous federal government institute having its own legal entity in charge of three main objectives as expressed in the regulation number 301/2013: 1). One of the objectives is conducting Research on priority public health and nutrition issues (based on national public health research agendas), generate, translate and disseminate scientific and technological knowledge. Health System and Reproductive Health Research Directorate (HS-RH-RD) is one of the directorates of EPHI which has roles and responsibilities to conduct national researches on health system and reproductive health.   

 The Health System and Reproductive Health Research directorate (HS-RH-RD) has received financial support from countdown to 2030 through African Population and Health Research Center to analyze data on RMNCAH-N. The research project will focus on strengthening the analysis and synthesis of data at national level in the context of annual, midterm and end-line review of the HSTP by analyzing the coverage, equity, mortality, causes of mortality, and financial flow analysis on basic indicators of RMNCAH-N. In addition, the study will focus on maternal and new born mortality to understand the drivers of the rapid country progress since 1990. This strengthening is envisaged to inform in country reviews and accountability processes among countries supported by the Global Financing Facility (GFF), which aims to contribute to the achievement of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for RMNCAH-N in 50 countries.

Main activities and responsibilities

• Coordinate qualitative research according to plans and follow up the progress
• Contribute to qualitative sampling framework development
• Contribute to developing and translating discussion topic guides
• Contribute to developing and translating survey tools
• Conduct interviews,
• Qualitative data collection, 
• Receive data from data collectors regularly and Archive data in a secured, password protected computer
• Transcribe/ translate qualitative data
• Check quality of transcripts and translations
• Code data and develop thematic areas for analysis    
• Analyze qualitative data in a team
• Review published and unpublished documents
• Analyze policy process
• Write descriptive and analytic reports of findings
• Maintain regular correspondence with co-coordinator, and other members of the research and project team
• Maintain regular Meeting with the TWG
• Prepare periodic reports

Job Requirements

Educational Requirements:

• PhD in Epidemiology, Sociology, Medical Anthropology or MSc in Epidemiology/Sociology/ Medical Anthropology with demonstrated Qualitative research experience
• Minimum of 7 years for PhD and 8 years for Msc/MA with proven work experience in progressive senior-level research, program, project management

 Additional Job Requirements:

• Extensive experience in qualitative data collection and analysis
• Experience in quantitative data collection and analysis
• A record of peer-reviewed publications in line with respective areas of discipline
• Strong leadership and excellent interpersonal communication skills, energetic, passionate, patient, proactive and self-motivated
• Good written and spoken English
• Ability to build rapport and feel comfortable working in a team
• Ability to read text, absorb and pick out the interesting, important and relevant parts
• Willing to travel outside Addis Ababa
• Willingness to learn and develop skills
