Job Description

MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THE POSITION

Prepare, provide and present health education sessions to the population/patients according MSF principles and values in order to promote health information through health measures and hygiene conditions as well as provide information about MSF activities in order to facilitate access to healthcare by establishing the linkage between the community and modern health care practice

 RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS   

  • Provide curative packages trough community-based management of common childhood illnesses (Case management of Diarrhea, Malaria, Respiratory Tract Infection).
  • Provide health service to the community in delivering integrated preventive, promotive and basic curative health services.
  • Serve to give voice for the demands of community in order to make health services more responsive to the community needs.
  • Visiting pregnant women’s during pregnancy specifically to improve the attending ANC/PNC and the institutional delivery, child immunization, and family planning.
  • Referral from the community to ensuring the continuity of care connecting patient with different level of care
  • Work directly with households, map them and prioritize health problems of the village (s). Serve, provide essential health services through outreach activities.
  • Train, demonstrate, and educate families to create role models in line with the outreach component objectives to enables people to increase control over their own health by engage and empower individuals and communities to choose healthy behaviors, and make changes that reduce the risk of developing diseases and injuries.
  • Support CHWs’ service delivery (community case management, patient records, referrals/feedbacks/backward referrals etc..) by monitoring of vital events and disease surveillance including verbal autopsies to determine cause of death, burden of diseases such as Respiratory track Infections, diarrhea, acute malnutrition and malaria.
  • Ensure and perform the quality of data collection. Ensure client database is always well-maintained, making sure to include all necessary notes, forms and supplementary information through weekly checks and updates to promote efficiency.
  • Participate in weekly outreach activities organized by the Medical Activities Manager outreach and the HP team to raise community awareness of general health, health risks to specific groups, such as pregnant and lactating women, children.

In brief, MSF proposed a project that will provide essential primary health care to at least 72,586 people, of which 24,028 of them are IDPs for two years, with an emphasis on reproductive, maternal and child health, the project will focus on improving access to quality preventative and curative health care services, lifesaving services to pregnant and lactating women and children.

The location of the project will be Sababoru. We are targeting an HC Darme as a core facilitywith 24/7 services with secondary health care capacity. And 15 kebeles for outreach with a clear referral mechanism to 4 less equipped HCs and from them to Darme HC and further referral to Hawassa or Negele hospital. The targeted areas and population will be in phases. April we target 6 kebeles, June start service at Darme HC and September the rest 9 Kebeles.

General Objective: The HEW will promote collaboration and referral system from the Host community and IDPs to the Health Facilities (Including Darme). They will also identify treatment interventions and actions that should take for treating child under 5 years from diarrhea, pneumonia and Malaria, referral of children with danger signs, pre-referral treatment of those children, and provide treatment at home.

Activities:

  • Providing care at the community level (Primary Health Care. Centers, Health Post) supervising the community health workers, hold meetings with community members, conduct deliveries, treat minor.
  • Serve as a liaison between health/social services and the community to facilitate access to services and improve the quality and cultural competence of service delivery.
  • Prepare material and deliver health education sessions, messages and topics addressed to different populations regarding hygiene, diseases and prevention.
  • Ensure all the patients and caretakers are well informed, according to protocols, about health-related issues and services provided.
  • Monitor health situation and living conditions of the population by conducting nutritional screening, collecting information related to food security, checking vaccination status of children, looking actively for any defaulters in programs that require this type of research, collecting information on number of people arriving or leaving the community, births and deaths in the community, etc.
  • Identify people with medical problems, contact with medical team and report for immediate transfer if needed. He/she has to inform to the line manager about any problem encountered (population, equipment, material…).
  • Report to line manager of all results of screening and visits on a regular basis.

Job Requirements

Education

Literacy essential/ High school diploma or its equivalent. An internal MSF training on health messages will be necessary
