About the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT)

The role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This involves strengthening Australia’s security, enhancing Australia’s prosperity, delivering an effective and high quality overseas aid program and helping Australian travelers and Australians overseas.

The department provides foreign, trade and development policy advice to the Australian Government. DFAT also works with other Australian government agencies to drive coordination of Australia’s pursuit of global, regional and bilateral interests.

About the position

The Corporate Services Manager will assist the Embassy to achieve its priorities through high level administrative and management support to our operations. The work will include ongoing redesign of corporate work and management of a small team in a multicultural working environment. We are a small and dynamic embassy and require a proactive and motivated person who is detail-oriented, can work independently and can solve problems. The ideal candidate will be flexible and able to take on a wide variety of roles within our organization.

The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Work closely with post management to formulate, review, implement and oversee policy at post on administrative and corporate functions such as human resources, financial management, property, IT and post security;
  • Provide high-level advice to Embassy management on complex HR, labor law, personnel, protocol and administrative issues;
  • Supervise a small team, establish work priorities, monitor performance, provide regular feedback and identify learning opportunities for team members;
  • As the Local Area Network Administrator (LANA) manage IT functions including provide technical support in relation to the unclassified network, ensure post’s records management in accordance with policy and legislation, troubleshoot first level IT and communication issues and liaise with local communications providers;
  • Manage and coordinate selected procurement and contracts in accordance with departmental guidelines and in consultation with post management;
  • In consultation with post management, coordinate and deliver the Embassy’s staff training plan;
  • Collaborate with the Property Manager on property matters for the chancery and residences including lease negotiations and maintenance in accordance with applicable regulations;
  • Ensure compliance with workplace health and safety legislation by performing risk assessment activities and reporting as required;
  • Establish, develop and maintain strong working relationships with a range of key contacts including local institutions, government authorities and embassies in Ethiopia and regionally; 
  • Assist with program preparation and logistical support for visiting officials and for other events as required; and
  • Under direction, as a back-up Consular and Passports staff, provide high-level consular and passport services and hold accountable documents in accordance with departmental guidelines.

Qualifications/Experience

  • Excellent spoken and written English and Amharic.
  • Team player with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with a small, multicultural team.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage resources, work independently, priorities and organize workload to meet deadlines.
  • Strong capacity to analyze problems and present achievable solutions. 
  • Demonstrated sound judgement and proven ability to exercise discretion, be flexible and adapt to new tasks and situations.
  • Work experience in management or a related field, with tertiary qualifications.
  • A commitment to the Embassy's Code of Conduct, displaying personal integrity and an honest, ethical approach.
