Purpose:

ZOA is partnering with DW Akademie to implement its Community Engagement project in and around three camps of Terkeidi, Ngunyiel and Kule located in Itang woreda, Gambella Region. The overall objective of the project is to create access to reliable and timely information to refugees and host communities by establishing dissemination mechanisms in and around the refugee camps. This will help both the refugees and humanitarian/governmental organizations to exchange humanitarian information.

The team leader will coordinate ZOA’s community engagement project by working closely with humanitarian organizations operating in the camps. S/he will represent the project in various coordination meetings, work with the humanitarians to identify messages and plan community engagement activities.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Lead on relationships with humanitarian partners (UN and NGO) relevant to the two sites to strategize about messaging;
  • Support partners to operate in a more strategic and coordinated way to identify critical issues to pool together community engagement and accountability resources for greater program impact.
  • Explore new ways of engaging with communities and channeling their feedback to humanitarian service providers; Identify communications channels agencies could potentially employ to strengthen community engagement
  • Assist trainers in the capacity building of local community correspondents on information gathering techniques, humanitarian communication, including Communications with Communities, script writing, and technical aspects of mixing program content.
  • Manage the audio delivery processes and find innovative ways to expand these e.g., mobile phones, static speaker sites, mobile speakers etc.
  • Manage dedicated listening groups, building the number of groups, listeners and sites where the program is played.
  • Ensure all deliverables are met on time to a high standard.
  • Support research activities (including surveys, focus group discussions etc.) to learn and build the program.
  • Deliver regular program reports and newsletters to field office and partners.
  • Performs other related activities as required.

Job Requirements

Competencies, Qualifications and Experience:

  • Minimum of a university Degree or Diploma in social sciences, communication or related field
  • At least two years’ experience working with humanitarian organizations in a coordination, community outreach, communication or similar roles
  • Fluency in English and the local language used by refugees
  • Adequate knowledge of MS office package [word, excel, ppt]
  • Experience compiling reports, coordinating activities with zonal/regional office
  • Experience in leading and coordinating a local team– often with no or limited experience in journalism or reporting
  • Good organization and documentation skills
  • Strong communication skills
  • Sensitivity to cross-cultural and gender dynamics in the workplace
  • Must be self-reliant, a team player, resourceful, good problem-solve
  • Experience working within the do-no-harm-principle
  • Proven analytical skills and ability to think strategically
  • Fluency in English – written and verbal
  • Ability to communicate in local languages is desirable;
