Purpose:

ZOA is partnering with DW Akademie to implement its Community Engagement project in and around three camps of Terkeidi, Ngunyiel and Kule located in Itang woreda, Gambella Region. The overall objective of the project is to create access to reliable and timely information to refugees and host communities by establishing dissemination mechanisms in and around the refugee camps. This will help both the refugees and humanitarian/governmental organizations to exchange humanitarian information.

The Editor/content developer supports ZOA’s community engagement project to set up the Narrowcast Audio Service, together with a team of approximately 6 content generators, trained to produce an audio program for the refugee community in the camps. The editor/trainer will also provide ongoing mentorship and training to the production team at individual and team level.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Mentor the narrowcast team to ensure clear editorial direction, processes & outputs
  • Train volunteers in the use of broadcast equipment
  • Train staff to produce community reports, information updates, program and features (mainly audio)
  • Develop strong checks and balances into the editorial process to ensure fact-checking and conflict-sensitive reporting.
  • Ensure proper documentation of content and maintain the database.
  • Coordinate with other NGOs to facilitate creative program sharing and collaboration.
  • Support gender mainstreaming throughout the project
  • Work extensively in the community to increase community participation
  • Contribute to the wider communications for the project as a whole with excellent writing and communications skills.
  • Performs other related activities as required.

Job Requirements

Competencies, Qualifications and Experience:

  • Relevant degree (for example in media, communications, journalism, international development, or humanitarian sector)
  • Proven track record in journalism and editing
  • Fluency in digital editing software, such as Adobe Creative Suite, Audacity, or equivalent.
  • Practical experience in planning and operating participatory training programs and develop staff
  • Experience in leading and coordinating a local team– often with no or limited experience in journalism or reporting
  • Strong communication skills
  • Sensitivity to cross-cultural and gender dynamics in the workplace
  • Must be self-reliant, a team player, resourceful, good problem-solver
  • Experience working within the do-no-harm-principle
  • Ability to work independently as a part of a team to implement the project;
  • Proven analytical skills and ability to think strategically;
  • Fluency in English – written and verbal;
  • Ability to communicate in local languages is desirable;
