Job Description

Main Job Purpose

  • Unilever Ethiopia aims to build a leading Unilever Business in Africa, that moves Ethiopia forward through social impact. We are looking for a Corporate Affairs Manager based in Unilever’s offices in Addis Ababa to help steer the business forward during this exciting period of growth and investment. This role will be a key Business Partner to the Managing Director in Ethiopia, as well as support whole leadership team.

Key Responsibilities

Corporate relations

  • Provide strategic political, corporate reputation enhancement and communications guidance to the Ethiopia business and act as a strategic partner to the leadership team.
  • Advise on and facilitate contact with Federal and Regional Government and key political figures to support Unilever in developing manufacturing sites, building brands, marketing, distribution, supply chain, regulatory compliance and customs procedures.
  • Develop and implement a strategy of engagement and strategic relationships to support the business growth ambition and secure our license to operate.
  • Support the Unilever Board in Ethiopia in external engagements and represent Unilever where necessary in trade associations, industry bodies and other self-regulatory committees.

Media, Issues and Crisis Management

  • Implement issues and crisis management procedures in the event of threats to Unilever’s reputation or operations.
  • Manage media relations to protect and build Unilever’s reputation.

Unilever Compass

  • Lead the Bright Future agenda for Ethiopia by developing country-led strategies, establishing right partners and executing the plans with measurable impact
  • Support the business to manage and establish targets related to Unilever’s Compass and sustainability commitments.
  • Manage the local implementation of Unilever’s Global and Africa foundation projects.

Communications and Employee Engagement

  • Support communications to motivate and enthuse employees behind Unilever’s leadership, East Africa strategic vision, social impact contribution through the Bright Future lens and overall business growth ambition.
  • Work with Unilever’s global and East Africa communications function to ensure consistent approach to corporate identity.

Job Requirements

Key Requirements

  • A seasoned professional with a minimum of 8 – 10 years relevant experience
  • The successful candidate will be a highly motivated self starter with excellent contacts across Ethiopian political and commercial networks.
  • Capable of engaging with senior management and political figures and regarded by peers as a top level performer in corporate communications and external relations.
  • Ideally familiar with the FMCG business, brands and marketing and /or a similar multinational corporate culture, they will understand the issues faced by a multinational subsidiary operating with a very strong local identity.
  • They are as comfortable engaging in business and commercial discussions as they are presenting positions externally and handling the media.
  • Their personal qualities mark them out as able to motivate a team and project calm through busy periods.
  • A “people person” they network easily, rapidly build trust and establish relations with people whatever their professional or personal background.
  • They will be passionately behind Unilever’s vision of Sustainable Living and enthusiastic for creating a business that shows business growth can be responsible and sustainable.
