REPORT TO : Coordinator for Child Rights
DURATION : 1 year fixed term contract (as a project based fixed term hire) but with a possibility of moving to long term employment in line with the new organizational design
Purpose of the Job:
To take a lead in the day to day implementation of research, advocacy and campaign plans to enhance the promotion and protection of children rights and gender equality in Ethiopia, including in emergency and conflict situation such as in Tigray, Benishangul-Gumuz and Oromia regions.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Support the undertaking of researches, studies and analyses to identify legislative gaps in relation to child rights and gender equality, and formulate advocacy briefs and calls for the promotion and protection of the children’s rights and gender equality;
- Conduct assessments for the identification of children’s rights violation and gender based violence (GBV) protection needs, including in conflict situation such as Tigray, Benishangul-Gumuz and Oromia regions;
- Support in the development of advocacy and campaign messages and materials for the promotion of child rights and gender equality in line with national, regional and international standards;
- Contribute to the development of annual plans of the Function on protection and promotion of children’s rights and gender equality, including in emergency and conflict situations;
- Support in organizing awareness raising, campaigns and events on the protection of children rights and elimination of gender based violence to ensure adherence to national, regional and international protection standards and guidelines;
- Actively contribute to the execution of legislative and policy initiatives regarding children rights and gender equality;
- Communicate with and influence a range of external stakeholders and advocacy targets including the Government and relevant authorities on the basis of identified gaps for the effective promotion and protection of children rights and gender equality;
- Support the initiation of nationwide and regional movements to advocate and campaign for the promotion and protection of children rights and gender equality, including the ratification and implementation of relevant international and regional human rights instruments;
- Ensure mainstreaming of children’s rights and gender equality as relevant in other advocacy and campaign activities of EHRC;
- Conduct mapping of stakeholders that can provide support to children who suffered human rights violation and are in need of support, including in conflict situation such as Tigray, Benishangul-Gumuz and Oromia regions;
- Actively contribute to building capacity, knowledge, values and standards based on identified needs of both governmental and non-governmental national stakeholders on children rights and gender equality;
- Conduct and follow up on advocacy and monitoring initiatives to ensure implementation of recommendations, general comments and concluding observations of international and regional human rights bodies’ at the national level;
- Participate in discussion forums set in institutions and organizations, including other NHRIs for joint programming, sharing of experience and promising practices, regarding the promotion and protection of children rights in their policies and organizational operations.
- Keep the Coordinator informed with regular detailed and accurate reports on progress and challenges in advocating and campaigning for the promotion and protection of children and children rights conducted by the Team.
- Undertake other duties and tasks deemed necessary.
Job Requirements
Qualifications and Experience:
- MA or BA Degree in law, Human Rights Law, International Law, Gender Studies, or related fields.
- 4 years of relevant experience for BA and 2 years of relevant experience for MA;
- Proficient computer skills.
- Proficiency in Amharic is required and knowledge of other local languages is advantageous
