Position Title: Senior Director of Programs
Department/Program: Integrated Programs
Reports to: Country Representative
Based in: Addis Ababa
Duration of contract: Indefinite based on performance and availability of funds

Who we are
We’re Population Services International (PSI), the world’s leading non‐profit social marketing organization. We work to make it easier for people in the developing world to lead healthier lives and plan the families they desire by marketing affordable products and services that range from mosquito nets to contraceptives to HIV testing. We are a $560m enterprise based in Washington, DC, operating in the private and public sectors in more than 65 countries.
Join us!
There are over 5,000 “PSI’ers” around the world. It’s a diverse group of entrepreneurs and professionals with an unusually wide range of backgrounds - from the medical industry to the music business - all with unique skills we bring to the job.
PSI/Ethiopia is an innovative network member of PSI with a team of more than 240 people passionate about marketing, market development and dedicated to serving Sara! Since 2003, we have marketed products and led programs to prevent and treat HIV, improve reproductive health for youth and adolescents, build markets for sanitation and support the health system to deliver non-communicable diseases services. At PSI/Ethiopia we do more than simply provide products and services, we seek to create true change – by making markets work for the poor – to increase the use of critical health products and services that are available, affordable, and desirable to the most vulnerable Ethiopian people.
We are looking for a charismatic leader with a talent for aligning teams and deliver results. You are a natural-born true Manager and have experience working in public health, might have worked in the private sector for a few years, and have a proven track record in innovative program design, quality execution and continuous quality improvement. You are a thought leader in at least one of the health areas PSI/Ethiopia is engaged in (AYSRH, WASH, HIV/TB and NCDs) and are eager to always learn more. You are a “connector”, of people and ideas, able to see the big picture, envision strategy, anticipate changes in the operating environment, observe trends across relevant industries and ideate around those. You are grounded on reality, capable of framing concepts to quickly lead them to execution. Above all, you have an infectious energy for building empathy with our consumers leveraging their insights to design solutions that are tailored to their needs and desires.
Your contribution
You will work under the supervision of and in partnership with the Country Representative. You will have an open channel with the Market Group team and the headquarters. More specifically, you will:
Own the Strategy and our Operational Plan: you will keep yourself constantly updated on any change happening in our operating environment, to inform the strategy and contribute to adapting, if needed, our Operational Plan. You will share accountability with the Country Representative on the Strategic Results Framework and the program related Country Annual Goals.
Establish solid and durable Government and Donors’ relations: you will coordinate with the Country Representative to liaise with our main stakeholders in country. You will routinely meet with donors and government officials to make sure that PSI/Ethiopia’s work is valued and recognized. You will partner with our Operations Division to identify any institutional compliance requirement and recommend a way forward.
Live the principles of Great Management: you will embrace the AIM model that PSI globally is adopting in management. You will Align teams and deliver results, you will Invest in growing performing teams and you will Model a learner’s mindset.
Contribute to the Design of new Programs: by fostering the application of PSI’s Keystone process and facilitating the collaboration between Marketing, Evidence and Learning and Integrated Programs, you will seek to contribute to the innovation and generation of new business opportunities to better serve more of our consumers. You will proactively track the trends in our industry, mapping upcoming funding opportunities and connecting with the “expert partners” in that space.
Ensure timely, compliant and “on budget” Execution: as an “Operations Machine” and a talented Manager, you will coach your team on the best-in-class Project Management Standards and drive high performances. You will work to ensure that quantitative and qualitative evidence is turned into action and that learnings turn into program adaptation. Your deep understanding of budgeting processes, and compliance will make you the guardian of compliance for the Integrated Programs Division.
Improve the Quality of our Programs: you will drive quality improvements at all levels across our programs, from data to service delivery to counselling. You will work closely with each Program Director to make sure that quality becomes the top agenda item, both in design and execution
Integrate, Integrate, Integrate: you will support our Primary Healthcare Operational Plan Priority, reimagining the role that PSI/Ethiopia will play in the future. You will foster integration at all levels to make it easier for our consumers to access health products and services. Integration will go from design to execution, promoting the creation of strategic partnerships that will position PSI/Ethiopia for the next big investment.
Your background
What it takes to succeed
A self-starter: You have the ability to work independently with minimal supervision; you are someone who is proactive in looking for new opportunities;
A communicator: You have excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills;
Fire in the belly. You bring energy and passion in what you do;
Team player. You ‘play well’ with others and have proven ability to obtain buy-in from multiple stakeholders and create change;
Leader. You are a visionary role model with demonstrated coaching skills and the ability to inspire those around you to achieve their maximum;
Curious and Flexible. You’re an information sponge and understand what worked yesterday won’t necessarily work today (or tomorrow), that each context is different. You have an ability to adapt quickly to these changing environments;
Desire to Make the World a Better Place. You have a passion to create change in the world and believe in providing better health solutions to the poor. You are a comprehensive family planning advocate.
