SOS Children’s Villages Ethiopia is an International Non-governmental organization and a member of SOS Children’s Villages International Federation. The organization started its humanitarian work with the opening of its first Village in Mekelle, Northern part of Ethiopia in 1974. The organization has been providing life-saving provisions such as food, water and health services for a very significant number of children devastated by severe drought and the subsequent famine.

Today, we have grown significantly to meet the persistent challenges that confront Ethiopian children who have lost parental care and are at risk of losing their parental care. Working in close collaboration with international donors, local government and community based organizations across seven program locations; SOS Children’s Villages Ethiopia aspires that every child grows up with love, respect and security.

Why we need you?

The LUX Project/Tigray Emergency Response Project focuses on responding and rehabilitating essential services like water and sanitation, health and nutrition to the IDP population in Tigray region (Alamat Zone) , especially those with intersecting vulnerabilities such as children, pregnant and lactating women (PLW) and those living with a disability, who are the most vulnerable as they experience additional barriers to access essential service.

The Health Officer will be responsible for providing preventive, rehabilitative and supportive health services to the project targets such as young mothers, adolescent girls, caregivers & children and play an important role in health promotion and advises on health related issues of the project. The Health officer is also responsible in addressing SGBV prevention and response, MHPSS and referrals.

Your role....

As a Project Health Officer for LUX Project, you will be in charge of the following:

  • Identify, & train health care professionals, peer educators on Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH), SGBV (Gender Based Violence) and COVID19 Prevention and protective measures.
  • Prepares health related educational packages on Covid19, GBV, sex education, etc.
  • Training selected health extension workers & health professionals on mental health first aid (MHFA), GBV services and referrals and provide MHFA and referrals 
  • Providing support for public health centers (Hospitals & Health Centers) to strengthen health care services;
  • Providing medicines, equipment and medical supplies to health facilities including Covid-19 supplies and PPE (Personal Protective Equipment's)
  • Facilitating primary and basic health care service for IDP's and host community members through rehabilitated health facilities and mobile medical teams in hard to reach areas
  • Setting up and strengthening Protection committees in IDP (internally Displaced People) collection centers and host communities;
  • Identification and referral for SGBV cases for legal support, medical treatment, MHPSS and livelihoods support;
  • Identification and referral of child protection and UASC cases to other SOS CV programs for case management and reunification
  • Preparing awareness raising session for young mothers & Adolescent girls on sexual violence protective measures.
  • Nurturing a compassionate environment by providing psycho-social support
  • Initiates, coordinates and provides guidance and counseling services
  • Educating and guiding beneficiaries on disease prevention and healthy lifestyle habits.
  • Prepare and submits for approval long- and short-term plans for social services.
  • Follows-up, evaluates and recommends measures to be taken in order to improve health care services to children, IDP and other target groups.
  • Ensures that target groups receive medical attention/ first-aid services if they are ill, injured and need medical treatment, refers serious cases to clinics and follows-up referral cases to hospitals.
  • Performs other similar duties as assigned by the project coordinator and as the emergency situation dictates.

The must haves

Education:     

  •  BSC Degree in Nursing, Health Officer, Public health and similar

Experience   

  •  2-4 years relevant work experience as a health professional

The Pluses:

  • Understanding of the Ethiopian Healthy policy
  • The incumbent must also have the knowledge of child right and UNCRC
  • Fluent spoken and written in English and in the language(s) spoken in target communities
  • Experience in Monitoring, evaluation and reporting is an advantage
  • Ability to work under stressful and emergency situations
  • Must be able to respond or assist in emergency situations and have very good interpersonal, mediation, negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
  • Previous experience working with international NGO's
