Who we are

SOS Children’s Villages Ethiopia is an International Non-governmental organization and a member of SOS Children’s Villages International Federation. The organization started its humanitarian work with the opening of its first Village in Mekelle, Northern part of Ethiopia in 1974. The organization has been providing life-saving provisions such as food, water and health services for a very significant number of children devastated by severe drought and the subsequent famine.

Today, we have grown significantly to meet the persistent challenges that confront Ethiopian children who have lost parental care and are at risk of losing their parental care. Working in close collaboration with international donors, local government and community based organizations across seven program locations; SOS Children’s Villages Ethiopia aspires that every child grows up with love, respect and security.

We are looking for a Family and Community Development Project Officer who will be responsible to guide and support individual families participating in the program to increase their self-reliance through facilitating the development and implementation of family development plan (FCDP).

Your role....

As a Family and Community Development Project Officer, you will be in charge of the following:

  • Implementing Family and Community Development Plan (FCDP) at household level 
  • Facilitating community mobilization sessions together with the community-based organizations, local authority and community based committees.
  • Participating in strengthening the capacity of Community Based Organizations (CBOs) to enable the support to ensure sustainability of the project
  • Conducting a home visit to the family of each potential child participant, living within the designated area/community, to carry out an initial assessment and make recommendation to whether the child (and his/her family) should participate in the program.
  • Conducting follow-up meetings with the family, together with the relevant co-worker from the community-based partner.
  • Undertaking regular meeting with families and preparing home visit reports.
  • Offering advice, guidance and support to the co-workers, to support the development of the families on an ongoing basis. 
  • Providing in-service training and coaching/mentoring to co-workers to support in the development of required knowledge, skills and confidence to take the lead role
  • Exploring possible contributions of project partners.
  • Ensuring that accountability systems are in place and functioning properly.
  • Managing files of families being supported in designated area/community with at most confidentiality and the set guidelines.
  • Carrying out regular reviews of the situation of the families
  • Updating the project coordinator on the situation of the families and the quality of program services and progress towards the desired project outcomes.
  • Actively participating in the annual project self-evaluation.
  • Actively participating in any other monitoring and evaluation processes, as required.
  • Representing the organization at relevant community gatherings and forums. 
  • Other duties as assigned by the Family and Community Development Project

The must haves: 

  • BA Degree in Sociology, Developmental Studies and other development related discipline.
  • Minimum 2 years related experience
  • Awareness and understanding of relevant social development issues, such as HIV/AIDS, Gender, Child rights issues and good awareness on the situation of OVC at national and regional level
  • Excellent command over English language including both written and verbal
  • Good communication skills
  • Basic computer skills
  • Team building & partnership development skills
  • Planning, organizing and report writing skill
  • Conflict resolution
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work under stressful situation
  • Fluency in the language(s) spoken in target communities
