Background

The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) was founded in 1970 through the initiative of the Norwegian and Swedish Save the Children organizations seconded by the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia. The Institute got its name from the Norwegian physician, Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen, who first described the leprosy bacillus (Mycobacterium leprae). AHRI is a biomedical research institute that works in developing tools for prevention, control and treatment of mycobacterium and other diseases of public healthy importance through applied and basic biomedical research and training.

Purpose of the Position

AHRI in collaboration with local and international partners is planning to undertake a project that supports the national cholera control and prevention effort through OCV effectiveness study and enhanced disease surveillance under a project called ‘Ethiopian Cholera Control and Prevention (ECCP)’. The project will be implemented in one of hotspot site for cholera therefore we are looking for a project coordinator who will be responsible for the coordination of the project activities centrally at AHRI, in the field and communication with partners per the detailed duties and responsibilities listed below. Therefore, the project coordinator in collaboration with project lead and staff at AHRI as well as in the field will initiate and coordinate all activities related to the project.

Position in the Organization: 

The project coordinator will be affiliated to the clinical trial directorate and report to the project lead, PI.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Coordinate project activities to ensure the quality and timely delivery of research results by:-

  • Preparing activity plan of the research project at all levels
  • In consultation with the project PI, lead and supervise execution of the project activities per identified protocol and milestones; and provide support to project staff as necessary.
  • Coordinate activities among the project staff at AHRI, site and all partners; and ensure smooth collaboration among all partners by organizing regular joint meetings in consultation with the PI.
  • Periodic monitoring of patient recruitment, samples collection & management, data collection, overall project progress and ensure quality of data with frequent field visit.
  • Securing the necessary resources and facility for conducting the research project
  • Carrying out the day to day operation including data collection, supervision of the field and lab activities and data management of the research project with frequent field visit
  • Ensure the quality of data collected per the study protocol and required standards
  • Provide technical support to project staff; facilitate and/or provide training to project staff as deemed necessary.

Contributes to training and ensures the efficient and effective utilization of project resources by:-

  • Identify and plan training needs, assist and/or provide training to the project staff in consultation with the project leader
  • Assist in preparing resource planning and implementation
  • Assists in data collection and analysis for evaluating the effectiveness of training and interventions when necessary.
  • Assist in preparing and utilization of the research project budget
  • Anticipating the research project’s material needs and requesting supplies on time

Assist in the dissemination of research results & Perform other related duties as required by:

  • Prepare technical reports as well as progress reports to ensure timely submission to relevant bodies including to the sponsor, ethics committees, etc per the requirements. 
  • Participate and/or present project related developments in any scientific platforms when appropriate.
  • Preparing and submitting periodic reports on the performance of the research project
  • Frequent Field visit, supervision and support of research project activities during data collection
  • Other research project related activities as assigned by the project lead, PI

Job Requirements

Educational Qualification and Experience:

  • MPH with first degree in Public Health (HO), Nursing or Laboratory Sciences; AND 8 years of experience of which 2 years in research is mandatory; OR
  • BSc in Public Health (HO), Nursing or Laboratory Sciences AND 10 years work experience of which 4 years in research is mandatory.

Additional competencies

  • Experience in writing scientific articles that can be demonstrated by publication is an advantage
  • Experience in project coordination is an advantage
  • Experience in relationship management with donors, partners, stakeholders in an international environment is an advantage.
  • Excellent verbal and writing skills in English.

Work station:  Addis Ababa with frequent field visit to project site, Shashemene

Employment Type: One year contract period with possible extension based on performance and budget availability.
