ORGANIZATIONAL DESCRIPTION

The Ethiopian Medical Association (EMA) is one of the first professional associations in Ethiopia and was stablished on July 2, 1962 G.C with 100 founding members through a formal charter granted to it by the then Emperor Haile Selassie I. EMA is member of World Medical Association since 1994 G.C.

EMA’s head office is based in Addis Ababa and has a presence in five regions represented by its ten regional branch offices (Gonder, Mekelle, Bahir Dar, Dessie, Jimma, Adama, Harare, Hawassa, D/Markos and Arba Minch). EMA has been operational for over 59 years on promoting quality of medical service in Ethiopia and evidence-based medicine through publishing the Ethiopian Medical Journal (EMJ). The mission of the association is to: Ensure that the community gets quality health service and care; Promote the highest standards in medical education, science, art and practice and ensure the rights and benefits of medical professionals (doctors) and act as their voice

Thus, the association would like to invite experienced and competent candidates for the below described vacant post: 

As per its vision, mission and core values of serving the community and its members, the Ethiopian Medical Association is currently planning to conduct a stress management intervention among women entrepreneurs in Ethiopia in collaboration with World Bank’s Innovative Financing for Women Entrepreneurs (IFWE) project. This intervention is a component of the portfolio of pilot interventions that form the Innovative Financing for Women Entrepreneurs (IFWE) project. Specifically the intervention involves rolling out a Self Help handbook called ‘Doing What Matters in Times of Stress’ designed by WHO along with delivering five sessions of scripted support from trained helpers to support women entrepreneurs to learn the stress management skills in the handbook. To this end, we are seeking to recruit and train 12 Lay helpers/Counselors who facilitate the intervention delivery of this complete Self-Help program to a group of selected women entrepreneurs

Female Lay helpers/Counselor Job Summary

The female counselor/lay helper will be responsible for helping and training people to manage and overcome mental and emotional stress according to ‘Doing What Matters in Times of Stress ’manual. The counselor will listen to women entrepreneurs’ and help them to understand the materials in the doing what matters in times of stress manual. The counselor will help women entrepreneurs to create stress management strategies, practice exercises and learn emotion and stress management using the information in the stress management manual as well as the scripted materials prepared for this intervention. Will train women in managing stress and emotions, listen to, support, and monitor the stress management for progress throughout the intervention period. The counselor will work with individuals and groups and will introduce the intervention to the entrepreneurs and prepare them for the sessions, schedule each session and send reminders to the women to practice the exercises that were taught during the session.

Duties and responsibilities are:

  • Attend Training on counseling by using the Doing What Matters handbook and guidance manual;
  • The trained lay helpers will be expected to carry out an introduction session and then deliver the guided self-help materials over 5 sessions of support by phone for each entrepreneur over a period of 5 weeks. The sessions may take up to one hour including the introduction;
  • Facilitate and follow the weekly personal practice of stress reducing exercises by the entrepreneurs according to the guidance manual using text messages and record the duration and number of exercises;
  • The helpers will also call the entrepreneurs to introduce the intervention and prepare them for the sessions, schedule each session and send reminders to the women to practice the exercises that were taught during the session;
  • Facilitate referral of severe cases;
  • Prepare daily activities report;
  • Be responsible for carrying out the above-mentioned intervention Pilot study under close supervision of assigned project officer as well as senior research officer.

Job Requirements

Educational qualification & experience

  • Preferably BA Degree in psychology.
  • Experience with providing psychological support and identifying and referring cases that require medical attention.
  • Some background in providing psychological first aid
  • Able to work flexibly at the convenience of the entrepreneurs
  • Preferably, have previous experience of phone-based interventions will be valued
