Job Summary

Samaritan’s Purse (SP) is looking for an Information and Communications Manager (ICM) for our Ethiopia field office with programming operating across 6 districts. The ICM will work under the guidance of the Ethiopia Program Development Officer, Senior Programs Manager and Country Director to write internal reports, design and implement the country-level communications strategy, and highlight the work of SP in Ethiopia through impact stories and social media platforms

Job Requirements

Description of Job duties:

  • Gather accurate information and conduct research to write recurring situation reports that are used to brief the SP leadership team on the overall situation in Ethiopia, program activities, security incidents, and other pertinent issues.
  • Liaise with SP Ethiopia and IHQ Grants Department and field staff to compile program achievements for regular board reports, quarterly reports, and donor ministries mailings.
  • Frequent travel to field sites to encourage, train, and provide guidance to field staff, including facilitating staff workshops focused on photography, writing skills, and gathering impact stories.
  •  Assist with field staff in writing and editing impact stories related to SP programs. The stories should reflect the full spectrum of Samaritan’s Purse programming in Ethiopia and communicate the impact SP programs are having on beneficiaries and the communities in which they live.
  •  Coordinate trips to Ethiopia for the International Headquarters visitors, journalists, and other individuals, as well as escort them to the various field sites (as necessary).
  •  Liaise with NGO/UN communications personnel and establish relationships with local and international media personnel in Ethiopia.
  • Train and prepare authorized SP staff prior to internal and external media interviews.
  • Actively manage country office Twitter account, by posting engaging data, photos, and videos that highlight the work of SP in Ethiopia and the needs of the country. Effectively engage with Twitter audience.
  •  Work with the Communications Department at IHQ by submitting impact stories, up-to-date program information, and media content to be used on social media platforms that properly reflects the impact Samaritan’s Purse is having in Ethiopia.
  • Provide insight to Country Director on critical program activities and any serious physical, emotional, or spiritual concerns of staff.
  • Plan and manage communications in response to both slow and rapid-onset emergency/disaster relief situations.
  • Provide direct support to Country Director as needed. Assess, manage, and report critical physical, emotional, or spiritual concerns of supervised staff.

Job Qualifications:

  • Excellent creativity and interpersonal communication skills
  • Masters of Art (MA.) from a university in Journalism, Communications, or a related field, with relevant experience and training preferred.
  • Experience capturing photos for internal and external publications using a DSLR camera
  • Skilled in using computer software for developing presentations, donor and government reports
  • Must be culturally sensitive and respectful of people from all cultures and religious backgrounds
  • Established work ethic; able to work independently and diligently without direct supervision
  • Willingness to travel in and out of the field.
  • Willingness to stay in the field for extended periods.
