Purpose:

The Agricultural Development Officer will be responsible to provide an in-depth technical support on over all extension services that ZOA will provide to farmers particularly improved agronomic practices related on horticulture crops to famer communities. The incumbent will closely work with farmers cooperative of refugees and host communities in Melkadida 

Typical Responsibilities - Key end Results of the Position:*

  • Training on improved agronomic practices to extension workers and lead farmers
  • Capacity assessment for extension workers
  • Developing context based training manual (horticulture)
  • Conducting training on improved agronomic practices to extension workers and lead farmers
  • Providing technical support to cascading training on improved agricultural practices by lead farmers to other farmers beneficiaries
  • Post and pre assessment

Nursery management

  • Assessment of 2 nursery (fruits and horticulture)
  • Conducting assessment to identify the gaps of the nursery and producing report including recommendation of materials and seedlings of different varieties (Gode research center)
  • Establishing demonstration plots
  • Site selection of the demonstration plot
  • Preparation of ToR for the implementation of the demo plot

Establishing demo plot

  • Introduction of adaptable improved seed varieties and its agronomic practices to farmers
  • Introducing (participatory variety selection)
  • Evaluation of the adoption of the technologies
  • Facilitating Peer to peer farmers extension
  • Organizing farmer field days
  • Providing training on post-harvest management for horticulture crops to farmers

Communications and Working Relationships:

The Agricultural Development Officer will work with all relevant stakeholders, including UNHCR and ARRA and internal ZOA departments to ensure the smooth implementation of agricultural related programming at Melkadida

Job Requirements

Educational Qualification and Experience

  • The potential candidate for the post should have MSc Degree from recognized Universities/Colleges in Horticulture or related fields. Besides, s/he should have at least 3 years of demonstrable work experience in areas of providing extension services to farmer communities.
  • NGO experience is highly preferred

Skills Specific to the Post.

  • Commitment to the vision and mission of ZOA Relief |Hope| Recovery;
  • Excellent understanding of agro ecological context of Dolo Ado area is preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to meet strict deadlines and work independently and cooperatively with team members in a cross-cultural environment.
  • Ability to work in hardship conditions.
  • Knowledge of Somali Language is preferable

Should be able to guide Livelihood staff under his/her direction to accomplish day-to-day activities

Competencies and values

The incumbent should possess high degree of integrity and able to lead a team in a disciplined manner
