Job Description

The Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) wants to recruit employees in the following vacant position the details of which are mentioned bellow.

About the Ethiopian Red Cross Society

The Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) was established in 1935 and is one of the oldest and largest humanitarian organizations in Ethiopia. ERCS provides services to communities affected by natural and manmade disasters through the provision of emergency responses, ambulance and first aid, family reunification, essential drugs, water and sanitation, and other humanitarian services. ERCS also runs disaster risk reduction programs with the aim of creating resilience households and communities. Currently the ERCS has a structure consisting of 11 Regional Offices, 34 Zonal Branches and 131 District/Woreda Branches, 599 Woreda Red Cross Committee and 5871 Kebele Red Cross committees.

Background of the Project

The project will be implemented in Benishangul-Gumuz Region (BGR). The region has been suffering from violent clashes between various groups due to several issues which have resulted in displacement of over 270,000 people in the region. Moreover, as the region is bordering with Sudan and South Sudan, it has also been hosting refugees from these neighboring countries. As a result, today in addition to 270,000 IDPs, over 62,000 refugees are residing in the region.

The tension between the groups of population is especially high in the Metekel zone of BGR. The situation has worsened rapidly over the past months. The clashes between the population groups have been triggered by local disputes over land ownership and recurrent justice issues. Many of the IDPs have also moved to Chagni district of Awi zone in Amhara. Apart from designated IDP sites, many of the IDPs are living in the host communities by further deteriorating the capacity of the host communities to cope with the issues of shelter, health, water, sanitation and hygiene.

The region is suffering from lack of healthcare services. The region lacks behind on many common health indicators: child nutrition, maternal nutrition, infant mortality, maternal mortality and dietary diversity. It has one of the highest under-five mortality rates in the country. The Government’s National Nutrition Program has set specific targets to achieve for improving the nutrition status of both children and women of reproductive age. Meeting these challenges will require additional health technical support.

Through this project, Ethiopian Red Cross Society, in cooperation with Finnish Red Cross, decided to provide multisector humanitarian assistance to conflict affected displaced peoples and the hosting communities in the Benishangul-Gumuz region and the Chagni IDP camp across the following sectors: health, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and non-food items (NFIs). The overall objective of the project is to improve the living conditions of the host community, returnees and IDPs as well as strengthening the capacity of the ERCS to provide sustainable health-related interventions not only in disasters and crises situation, but also during normal situation.
