ORGANIZATIONAL PROFILE

 Himalayan Cataract Project (HCP | Cure Blindness) works to provide critical eye care services, training for health professionals, and enhanced eye care infrastructure throughout Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa where lack of access to eye care results in unnecessary blindness. Working with local partners, HCP serves more than 1 million people annually through screening and treatment and provides over 100,000 surgeries, with an annual budget of $13.1 million.  This is an exciting time for the Himalayan Cataract Project. With increased exposure and visibility, we are expanding our team to meet new challenges, scale our work, and broaden our reach. We are seeking individuals with an aptitude for operating in growth environments with interest and/or experience in scaling systems.   

Country Program Overview

 The Himalayan Cataract Project has worked in Ethiopia since 2008 to strengthen systems of eye care by supporting surgical interventions aimed to reduce the high backlog of cataract blindness, provide specialized training opportunities to ophthalmic personnel, source necessary supplies and advocate for additional human and financial resources to be dedicated to eye health. HCP has invested over $12M USD in improving eye health in Ethiopia, resulting in eye care examinations for 3.1 million people; over 390,000 sight-restoring surgeries; and nearly 500 training opportunities for eye care personnel with more than 20 local partners across five regions. 

Roles and Responsibilities

Driving (anticipate approximately 60 % time): 

  • Provide driving services to the team to project sites in the country for field monitoring and supervisions/meetings in town (Addis Ababa) for HCP businesses. This role will require durations of time spent outside of home location.
  • Ensure the office vehicles are well maintained and are in good order; inspecting them regularly and ensuring that they are maintained systematically in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Operate and maintain transportation vehicles with a focus on safety and customer courtesy.
  • Ensure periodic scheduled vehicle maintenance is completed and reported.
  • Provide vehicle/driving safety briefing to travelers.
  • Ensure car requests and the log sheets are attached and aligned with requested dates before submitting for payment.
  • Maintains accurate, up-to-date records on trip sheets and logbook, staff transportation forms, vehicle maintenance schedules, fuel purchases, incident reports, accident reports, vehicle condition reports and other records that are requested from management.
  • Responds immediately to accident or medical emergencies by notifying emergency response providers and rendering First Aid until emergency personnel arrive.
  • Any other related duties assigned by line manager

 Logistic support (anticipate approximately 20 % time): 

  •  Support HCP’s Biomedical Engineer and clinical staff in managing inventories, distribution of supplies and ensuring the supplies have reached to partners
  • Create a system for car rental requests from the team to avoid delays and confusions (e.g., Request staff members on a weekly basis and post the vehicle requests on a wall…so that everyone sees what plan is available the subsequent week/s)
  • Verify documents submitted by the company related to driving expenses for payment are complete and clear and confirm to the finance team for payment, following internal guidelines and procedures
  • Assist the Country Office in facilitating and coordinating custom clearance activities from ChSA, Ethiopia Custom Authority and other Government Offices for equipment and consumables to be imported from abroad. HCP’s Biomedical Engineer will manage the process but will require support from the driver.
  • Identify risk areas related to planned travel with logistic management ahead of time and alert the management
  • Request on a regular basis from the HCP any logistical needs to be planned for week/s and months to come
  • Support HCP’s Biomedical Engineer as needed with a vehicle once items have been cleared from customs in order to deliver them to the responsible body

Liaison (anticipate approximately 20 % time): 

  • Support the organization in liaising with other stakeholders in the country
  • Support the finance and administration team to deliver/hand carry letters to the bank/ACSO/government ministries and partners, income tax payment    

Location: Addis Ababa with frequent travel to fields

Reporting to: Finance and Administration Manager

Work station: Addis Ababa with frequent travels to regions

Employment duration: One year contract with possibility for renewal

Job Requirements

Qualifications and preferred skills: 

  • Level IV and above graduate in from vocational school or college
  • Graduated from accredited driving school or must have and maintain valid and renewed third grade driving license from federal road transport authority
  • Minimum of 3 years of work experience in similar or related preferably with in non-governmental organizations
  • Flexibility in working in stressful situations and adapting for new and emerging procedures
  • Responds and acts constructively in conflictive situations
  • Computer skills (MS Office packs)
  • Trustable, committed and an ability to function well independently
  • Strong English language skills preferred  
  • Highly motivated, ready, and willing to take additional responsibilities
  • Training or experience in provision of first aid in case of emergency
